2023/24 Seamus Coleman

Coleman is experienced enough to know he need to take responsibility himself to clear lines. He shouldn't be concerned about his goalkeeper. Just deal with it

No one wanting to take any responsibility is a recurring problem with this team but I don't think that was necessarily the problem with Coleman. I'm not going to question him on that. He just made a poor mistake at a really bad time.
Good post mate, spot on, his error and biy god he knew it.
Tbf I thought he had a decent game apart from that but we need a quality replacement for him it's been a priority for at least 3 seasons and it's a sad fact on recruitment he's still having to.play.

The keepers not blameless.

But what did he think was going to happen if he chested the ball towards his own goal 3 yards out?

He's not very good anymore no.

The only difference is he was an excellent player for a decade

All our other full backs are rubbish and have never been any good.

Well one of them might become good and the others are never going to become good because they’re 35 and 38 respectively. So I see no benefit whatsoever in playing those two.

I think they are all rubbish right now

Our recruitment at full back has been as bad, if not worse, than our recruitment of goalscorers.

It's a really easy position to scout and recruit for too. Probably the easiest on the pitch.

I watched Patterson on Tuesday and he was dreadful

I think we just have terrible full backs. Lots of rubbish players and Seamus who was a very good player but unfortunately well past his best.

Patterson’s confidence is shot and he’s pretty rusty (unsurprisingly). He has absolutely been much better for Scotland in the past, and in both games you could see what he was trying to do and the good positions he was getting into, it was just the execution of it wasn’t always great. He also didn’t get much help from McGinn tbh, often had the ball and no options to pass to.

To be fair I was only watching the game because I'm an NI fan. I dont watch Scotland very often

But I was shocked at how poor he was.

And the best full back on the pitch by an absolute mile plays for the reds.

I thought the contrast between how Bradley played in comparison kind of sums up where we are at as a club.

We never wanted to replace Coleman. Sentimentality stopped us doing it. We had people at the club who thought the was a legend and the fans would kick off if we replaced him, hence why we didn’t even try and only ended up signing backups. Baffling, don’t know where this idea that he’s a legend has come from either. Because he shouts a lot and fist pumps the Gwladys? He was a decent full back once upon a time, that was well over 5 years ago at this point.

For me, you clear your lines at all costs, even if you think you heard anything - or say you did, even if you didnt etc. stops all this thing of leaving it to each other and so on. otherwise you get what happened which looked totally ridiculous

Yep. Similar to the palace away game where Tarkowski could clear it and thinks he hears a shout from Pickford.

Poor goal all round, Mcneil with a half arsed leg dangling out to block the cross, Branthwaite and Tarkowski watching the man instead of dealing with the ball and Coleman...well just a grim passage of play all round where the lot of them look like massive tits.
