I'd be happy if he learnt to bother to even try and put a foot in when the opposition winger tries to cross..he is a defender after all

He can't most of the time, since he rarely have someone who cover him. If he rush out to block the cross, he might get rounded by the attacker, creating an even larger chance for the other team. Everton got the same problem at LB..

Looks from that like he isnt covering LB?

Zat, how can you look at data like this and then claim that Barry has no legs to cover? Yesterday he was all over the pitch making tackles, clearances and interceptions, He may sometimes get to a challenge late but so do all defensive midfielders - at least he is usually aware of the danger and making an effort to stop it even if it means being a bit snide.

His job isn't to cover the full backs.
The centre backs go wide if the ball is played into the space vacated by our full backs and the holding midfielders or nearest one slot into a CB position.
It would be impossible for a midfielder to leg it to full back everytime that ball was played by the opposition.
The only time the holding midfielders help out the full backs is when doubling up on a winger.

Time for him and the LB to realise they are defenders first. No urgency in stopping a cross getting in or showing some mongrel.

This is true. You're right.

So lets say that Baines is all the way up the pitch and Kone is nowhere to be seen (as hes drifted inside somewhere).

We then have Mori in the CB-LB position and Barry moving back to cover Mori at CB. But in real time on a counter Barry isnt getting back fast enough (from what i can see).

Looking at the Newcastle game especially he was running back from his central position each counter (which werent fast) and didnt have any affect on the game.

Barry made 5 succesful tackles (more than anybody in the pitch apart from Colback who had the same amount), 2 clearances, and 1 interception - by anyone's measure that is a significant effect on a game. For comparison Eric Dier in Spurs match vs Newcastle had 1 tackle, 2 clearances and 3 interceptions yet doubt you would accuse him of not being able to get back fast enough and he was probably Spurs best player that game.

Anyhow we should really carry this on in his thread rather than Seamus's who had 2 tackles, 2 clearances and 1 interception against Newcastle

Maybe bucking the trend here but I thought he'd been superb after a poor few games following his injury. Was class against Palace at home, then played really well against Leicester and Newcastle.

Not his best game on Monday, granted.

I think it's telling that his best game in the last few months was against Newcastle, when he had Lennon to link up with ahead of him. His best game this season was probably Southampton away, when he had Cleverley down that side.

Del is so effective, but I think Coleman is always wary of running into space that Del may then attempt to burst into.

Still, there's room for improvement, but you can say that about every player bar Lukaku and Barkley, tbh.
