I think he is going further. He is not against them buying anything they want at all as your response makes clear. The issue is more related to the pressure they feel to buy when they see others have something - even if they don't need it - just to "fit in". To be fair this is common among the population as a whole "keeping up appearances with others" but is accentuated when the disposal cash leaps up at such a young age and is so out of sync perhaps with their upbringing which may have been much humbler.
What he's saying to young players is, don't get ahead of yourselves and think that buying designer gear is your job - he says a players job is to train and play well, not look good with fancy stuff.
