Transfer Rumour Sean Longstaff

I watched him abit during the time when Man U was said to be interested and didn't see anything special. He seems too slow. Slow to move, slow to turn, slow in passing, just slow. I was hoping they would buy him for 50m because then I can laugh at them for wasting all that money.

Do I want him here? For a fee below 5m or free, sure. He's a mini upgrade on Gbamin, Davies, Delph. A cheap squad filler who plays maybe 15 to 20 games a season, mostly as a sub and to allow starters a rest.
If he is brought in as a starter? Hard pass.

Is there a chance he can change my mind? Definitely, I will see how he plays here if he really comes before making any final judgement. If he proves me wrong then I'll be the first to say so.
If Benitez signs him then the cases of Rondon and Townsend, having also played for him before, would suggest he goes straight into his preferred 11.

We can discuss that if and after he signed and played. Rondon was never signed as a starter and I think Townsend will be on rotational basis with Gordon for the rest of this season and slowly phased out the next season.

If this rejected barcode has any sense of self preservation he will stay well clear of us.
A barely sub standard player arriving at the behest of struggling and increasingly unpopular manager, only a complete idiot would make that move………but he is a Geordie, so let the bloodbath commence.

You may not see it but I doubt we'd be persisting for him if Benitez didn't think he could fit in this system.
Benitez's system is abysmal because of the two-man midfield. It gets stretched easily and leaves gaps everywhere.

The numbers back it up with Longstaff, like they do with Allan. He's a player that wants to go press and be aggressive. That's fine as long as there are players behind to step in and plug the gaps.

Everton don't press as a team. At all. That's not individual, that's the set up. It clearly is not being worked on, because they can't do it. Again, the pressuring stats back this up, what we can see with our eyes watching the game.

Basically, we need a sitter in midfield to allow Longstaff to do what he's good at. We also need one of those to allow Allan to do what he's good at, and Doucoure. See what I'm getting at here?

Now, it could work if the plan is to have Doucoure a bit more advanced and have Allan and Longstaff a bit deeper. But you'd still have the issue of neither of the 'holding' players actually having the positional discipline to play the role.

And based on the evidence we have so far of Benitez's time here, I don't think he has any clue how to coach that into somebody.

Kirkbride confirming Longstaff + money for Digne offer. Terrible, terrible business. Was also hoping Longstaff wouldn't want to leave Newcastle, he thinks otherwise.

Sean Longstaff wants to secure a move to Everton this month - but a deal with Newcastle United remains complicated.

Rafael Benitez hopes to be reunited with a player he handed a Premier League debut to during his time as manager at St James' Park.

Longstaff is out of contract in the summer and, at this stage, it looks unlikely he will sign a new deal so the Blues hope an agreement can be reached before the end of the month.

A deal, which included the sale of Lucas Digne to Newcastle, was on the table a few days ago and would have seen Longstaff head to Goodison Park in return.

But it is understood the France left-back, who has fallen out with Benitez and is set to leave Everton in this window, is not currently keen on a move to the North East.

Newcastle are telling Everton they are not currently prepared to let Longstaff leave without another player heading in the opposite direction, but Longstaff is still hoping a move to Goodison can be sorted.

Digne is also on Chelsea's radar, but the Stamford Bridge club are said to be exploring alternative options to the 28-year-old.

West Ham's early interest appears to have cooled in the £18m signing while one source has told the ECHO that Real Madrid, managed by Carlo Ancelotti, have made tentative enquiries about the defender, but that remains unconfirmed.

Hahah looking at us flashing our skirt to the mighty Newcastle

Our central mids have been so poor for so long that I can’t tell if a midfielder who can pass run and shoot is good or just average. Either way he looks more useful than Tom Davies, but that’s not hard

I think it’ll be a Schneiderlin effect and people will pretend he’s amazing because he completes more 5 yard passes than any of our other midfielders.

EDIT: And honestly, based on the evidence we have so far, I'm only half-joking when I say I reckon I know more about how football in 2021 is played than Benitez. He's so bad.

And the problem will be.... he'll want to buy and keep buying players who'll play in that 2 the way he wants it.

As the current squad can't...if the idea is a complete overhaul... letting Benitez do it compared to a Potter or some other new, progressive manager is a waste of time

He looks like he wants to get up the pitch and put pressure on the opposition, and he has decent close control at times for a big lad.

Of course, the real issue for the Benitez Out Barmy Army (BOBA) is that the player is associated with him.

The golden rule on transfers for these poeple is that anyone who is considered poor or mediocre will be opposed and denigrated by the Barmy Army, and any player thought to be decent will be "a Brands / Ancelotti" hangover signing from their time here.

They are off the scale Branch Davidians.
