Second Balls

....winning the 2nd ball is not just about desire, it’s about physicality & mobility. Without Doucoure, it’s always going to be a problem as Gomes, Davies and Allen can’t be described as sharp.

Indeed. Said as much.

Mentality is a factor when it comes to pressing etc though.

Compare the attitude (or desire...) of the midfield vs Liverpool and vs Burnley.

vs Liverpool Doucoure, Davies, Gomes, Rodriguez. Not much more physicality there.

this has happened at least 3 times in last couple of matches with gomes being the main offender -
there are two or three players already pressing opposition in tight space along the line
gomes hesitantly comes in to the direct play, he firstly makes the others hesitant/confused as to what each is doing by joining them
then he goes further into the huddle, making an absolute tit of himself by contributing nothing and making the press less effective
but whats farcical is the opposition maintain possession by passing out through the exact space gomes came from
utterly clueless.

I think the issue is that Gomes is crap.

The big issue for me is Marcel Brands has signed 5 midfielders (6 if you include James) yet the midfield is still as issue.

At what point do we stop this fella wasting money?

He's signed two midfielders that are part of the solution to the second ball problem (Allan/Doucoure), one that unexpectedly has been chronically injured (Gbamin) and two that are part of the problem (Gomes/Delph), plus Rodriguez.

His predecessors signed no solutions, only problems. Not that I'm saying that the other midfielders don't have their uses, but rather that ball pressure isn't one of them.

It makes me wonder what the hit/bust rate is for midfielders generally, and why our hit rate has been so poor.

I genuinely think in these instances he is not confident/courageous enough to hold the exit line; of getting found out?
so he goes in looking like he is actually doing something/ showing intent when its anything but.

I've tried to think of what the issue is but anytime he shows any sign of being a footballer, he immediately undoes it by doing something you would laugh at if watching Sunday League. He his horrendous, even more so when he plays in the same midfield as Davies.

Spot on, this. Especially as we’ve really suffered against teams that press us high. Simple solution is to go long from the keeper, and we have one of the best aerial ball winners in the PL up front but no energy/desire/common sense to be around him for the knockdowns.

It wouldn’t QUITE be so bad if it was because the CMs were all rigidly stuck in their assigned defensive positions, because when the ball comes back at us they’re nowhere to be seen!!!

After a few games now, Ancelotti has referred to spirit/us not winning second balls;

I think he's spot on.

Our lads, particularly our midfield, aren't combative enough.

This team, points wise, is within a sniff of Champions League but you'd be hard pushed to find an Everton team that finished top 10 over the years with a worse midfield.

Doucoure, Allan and Rodriguez improved it ten fold at the start of the season. Doucoure was ran into the ground, Allan was carrying an injury before he eventually missed a big spell and is now looking rusty and Rodriguez is what he is.

We're then left with Iwobi. Davies. Sigurdsson. Gomes. They can't tackle. They're all bullied. They don't want to do the donkey work - they don't press/show enough for the ball. They're not balanced and they're just... passive. Andre Gomes being the most dribbled past player in the top 4 european leagues is indicative of the problem.

I think it's this Ancelotti refers to when he's talking about mentality, not showing spirit and not winning second balls. He's spot on.

For me, midfield remains the priority in the summer.

I see we're linked with Rabiot again. Our biggest transfer should be a centre midfielder...

After that, addressing that right flank to give us an actual threat/balance and this Everton team go to another level.
I never knew this. I’ve never really rated him because I think he should offer more, having read that now he should offer a serious threat going forward to balance his weakness but he doesn’t. I can’t even remember the last time he scored

Davies is only a young'un, a lot forget that. He's also suffered Koeman/Allardyce and co. Needs time.

Would definitely keep him, but we're not helping the lad with that team around him. Asking him to play a different game to cover missing players too isn't ideal/
We all do forget that Tom Davies is still about 15 don’t we?

I like him but I get what you mean.

It's frustrating because combativeness and effort is the least we should expect.

I think big strides were made with the purchase of Allan and Doucoure and its notable we haven't been able to play both of them.

Gomes and Sigurdson are slow and Iwobi is passive.

On a slightly related point, I'm also not sure the front two is working. I can understand why they are persevering but the link up doesn't seem to be working or for this thread, the pressing.
