Semi Finals

Can't disagree with anything you say here.

All I can say is that I saw him a few times against Everton in the '60s, both home and away, and that midfield of Best, Law and Charlton absolutely demolished us most times.

The problem for Best was that at the turn of the decade the Man Utd team was on the decline (ultimately resulting in their relegation, as we know), and there was no evidence that the slide was being arrested. The BIG problem for Best and the club was that there was no way he would be sold to another club, so he remained in a team with players that were simply not good enough. That was the situation that he was 'trapped' in. It was a very sad scenario that played out.

I hope the foregoing explains my views a lot better.
Slightly off topic but how did Ball, Harvey and Kendall match up to Best, Law and Charlton?

To stay on topic, Semi Final related, I do agree with the poster who earlier said that the player of the tournament will likely go to Mbappe if they make it through and win the Final, and Messi if it's Argentina. Would love it to be Messi to cement his greatness though.

Ball, Harvey & Kendall were magnificient for a couple of seasons or so (I was privileged to see the 69/70 team at every home game, and the odd away game); Best, Law & Charlton were on the top line for a lot longer.

Messi could have never scored a goal and still be a top 5 player ever, he is just so good

add in the ridiculous goal numbers and you easily get the GOAT
This. I don't know anyone who thinks Lampard and Gerrard (good as they were) were better than Xavi and Iniesta as midfielders despite scoring far more goals. So imagine if Xavi and Iniesta had scored as many goals as Lampard and Gerrard along with everything alse they did.
Would people suggest that the English pair were superior because they were better in the air? better athletes? could do it on a cold wet night at Stoke?
I don't think so.

I have a feeling people will vote best player to the one who finishes with fewer goals. That way one gets Golden Boot and one Golden Ball. To me that's how it should be as they've been the clear two standout players in this tournament.

Not a lot of overlap between Golden Boot and Golden Ball winners. It's not quite the empty set - Rossi and Schillaci won both - but even Brazilian Ronaldo went home with the Silver Ball in 2002. Granted, the voters might not have wanted to set the precedent of handing it to him back-to-back, but still.

I just want loads of mad drama. Ref getting legged all over the pitch, Deschamps sniffing his balls like Low did, Mbappe hat trick, Morocco 10:9 on pens, bitters everywhere.

3 nil France.

Best - Law - Charlton
I would only have classed Charlton as a midfielder in that 'midfield 3'
