Set pieces

Yes clearly, I just find the obsession with blaming zonal marking as a concept for every goal scored when it is used to be a bit odd. So I think it is worth pointing out when it is working.
It’s a weird one, isn’t it? Blaming zonal. It’s been used for nearly 2 decades now by every top manager, but people still have a hatred towards it cos pundits can’t actual dissect set plays and just moan abar zonal.

James has 3. Gylfi has 1. The goal yesterday doesn't go down as an assist but also came from Sigurdsson. The other one that I think is unassisted is Keane's goal against West Brom and that was from Digne's delivery.

So I'm going with 2 out of 7 from Lucas. That's enough to want him back but also not such a high percentage that I think it will drop off massively without him.

Defensively we look sound set piece wise , but think we should be doing way better from deadballs attack wise .
As you say our delivery is top notch .
We should make the most of them.
The top teams are always traditionally strong at attacking set pieces. If you’re playing badly but can maximise the odd corner you nick then that’s what really can catapult you up the table. Mina, Keane, DLC are some of the most aerially dominate players in the league.

Which manager could we just flat out not defend set pieces under again? I remember it getting to the point where it had become beyond tragic and was just funny

Remember reading during the Summer that it's Carlo's son, Davide, who's responsible for taking the team through set-piece duty.

When asked about duties at the club in an interview published on the official Everton website, the 30-year-old said: “My job when we are not on the pitch is to prepare sessions for the coming days, to prepare set pieces and, with other staff, the strategy for the next game.”

Yep
All the top sides do it well , Mountfield scored 19 in 106 apps for us.
Think if Mina & Keane get them sort of figures them tight games make all the difference.

Set piece thread = 0-1 to arsenal...from a set piece, probably given away via a rash Gomes tackle and flapped at by the returning Pickford, scored by a player who hasn't scored for ages or its his first P L goal.

Have I missed anything out?

Was just about to post that I’ve read somewhere davide does the free kicks

We've done that deep defending all season - I remember carragher berating us/ancelotti for it yet it's been working. Tall defenders measn tehy can almost always attack the ball head on rather than worrying about whats behind them.

It'll have its negatives too, but with a smaller keeper than usual it probably helps balance things for us.

Good point, also leaves less space/chances for Pickford to come rushing out and flapping at the ball.

Interestingly, overall we're not conceding any less on average than we did last season despite tightening down on set pieces. But in a league where scoring is waaay up this season, holding the line on goals conceded overall represents significant progress.

I agree that it's a nice feeling to see that we're no longer leaking points or playing ourselves out of matches entirely with boneheaded set piece defending.

Martinez. They didn't work on set pieces in training at all. I think they were told who to mark / positions during the pre-match meeting but other than that they never did anything in training. Defending or attacking.
