It's July 2020. Carlo Ancelotti has just remembered he is an Italian millionaire, and realises he doesn't have to spend his time walking along Crosby beach and queuing for chips at George and Angela's, and has buggered off to live the dolce vita on a Tuscan estate.

A.N Other moderately successful, telegenic euro manger has been appointed, but the recruitment strategy has been wildly revamped. You receive a phone call (the one you always knew in your heart of hearts was destined to come) and you have been appointed Director of Incoming Transfers.

Here are the rules:

• You start with a war chest of £100m. Further funds will come from player sales only • You have sole control of incoming transfers

• You have no say in outgoings, and they will occur as they did in real life

• You will receive all the outgoing transfer fees as the player leaves

• Injuries and other unpleasantnesses occur as they did in real life

• Only players who have moved in real life can be bought, and their reported transfer fees will apply. I will allow you to buy them at any time

• We will assume all players are willing to come to Goodison • We will assume wages can be covered • Miraculous recoveries in form must be supported by hard sums and extensive power point presentations. Assume players will be as good as they have been

• You are not allowed to buy Earling Haarland
