Shall we play a game?

Well, this hasn't gone as well as I'd hoped. A bit over elaborate perhaps.

I am still interested in the question of who we should have bought over the last few years though.

Who would have really made a difference? Are we buying obvious donkeys? Is it the system? The coaching? Are we actually buying reasonable players and making them worse? Would McNeill be throwing in crosses left and right if he was playing for Brighton? Have we bought bad players or just the wrong players?

We all know recruitment has been problematic, but where are we on the scale going from 'given our finances, standing and geographical location, this squad is about as well as we could do' to 'it's blindingly obvious the if we bought players X,Y and Z we'd win the champions league'? If its the latter who are X,Y and Z.

All in all, not sure that message boards are for me. Cheers.

Hi mate,

I read your OP and the game rules but I’m rubbish at games in general and cba even joking free fantasy football stuff my mates send me. I just fall off because of life and then finish bottom often getting my entrance money back.

But I thought I’d give it a go at answering your questions as despite some of obvious WUMs on here who I honesty believe mean no malice, there are some decent posters on here.

Who would have really made a difference?

Manager or players, board, chairman or owner I think is the question. We all know what Moyes did or didn’t do for us, and considering the entertainment style football world I have great respect for the man looking back on what he brought to the club. As a fan I literally had “good times”, not great time or amazing times, but I wandered through European capitals with fellow evertonians and my old man and enjoyed some decent games and results. Sadly that’s what current Bill wants us to cling onto forever, but time moves on and we never actually won a trophy. So other than it being ace for me, there’s little memory in history.

What made the difference when Moyes was in charge? I’d love to compare that complete club structure top to bottom to what we have been doing. It’s just logical to do that but that’s just me. The current board and owner would likely try and bring back the old band together ffs!

So in my view it may not be a person that would have really made a difference, but rather a team or specific setup, which is quite complex for the average football fan.

Are we buying obvious donkeys?

I wouldn’t say donkeys. But yes we are buying poor players hoping they will turn into superman when they put a blue shirt on. The reason we can’t attract decent players is that no one wants to play for us when we are bottom of the league.

Is it the system?

Yes, i think it’s the setup from top to bottom in terms of the actual football side of things.

The coaching?

Yes, I don’t think Frank understood maybe what the players expected of him as well as the other way round. I never liked the look of his assistant either and it’s very rare I say things like that. I’m a good judge of faces, he made me uncomfortable.

Are we actually buying reasonable players and making them worse?

Yes also, Onana is case in point. Bursts onto the scene with passion giving us hope. He will make mistakes, all footballers do, but he could do more good than bad I think he’s ace. But it seems it was coached out of him. They’ve held him back, probably the same with others like Gray. He drives down the wing and instead of trying to take on his man, he drops his arms, slows it down, and passes it 5 yards back for more piss roundery. He’s scared to try and take on the man. It’s his bloody job on the pitch to try ffs.

Would McNeill be throwing in crosses left and right if he was playing for Brighton?

Yes, but only when he makes an appearance. I don’t think he has enough tenacity to hold down a starting line up position. Reminds me a bit of Bilyaletdinov. Sweet left foot and could score some screamers, but 1 in 6 at best, and struggled with the physical side.

Have we bought bad players or just the wrong players?

Both. It’s becoming clear that the setup at Everton has a disorganised approach to signings, there’s probably all sorts of bizarre going’s on involved with loads of people lining their pockets or taking their cut, or doing favours. Scary thing is the setup isn’t going to change, it’s a privately owned company and we are just loony customers, me included.

In terms of where it’s gone wrong on the field. There used to be a poster on here called.. honestly, the Executioners Bong.

He must have been some sort of football analyst and he used to post breakdowns of the last match with diagrams and detailed explanations on who did what on the pitch and how the managers changed tactics etc. it was superb.

It used to settle a log of idol arguing and I honestly believe the forum in general loved it. So we started just arsing round more for fun, then the lad stopped posting, and we realised we’re all completely lost just cry arsing about the same stuff over and over.

Hope that helps mate.

Thanks for replying, you make some interesting points. It's kind of you to take the time.

Forget Haaland - the only Norwegian striker we're getting is Noah Baarde. 6'1, great in the air, shoots with left or right and pace to burn.

99 goals in 72 games for Nina Bayer Segerkusen..... or whichever obscure club you like really, it's your fantasy.
