to be honest mate, we go on what we see and what we read. But I don't need to read a report to know that there is a serious problem with youth gangs and knife crime. Many of these kids with knives are doing it because of the media, and the glamourisation of such crimes in games and videos/dvds.

But I am not a victim of media proliferation, and I also find it difficult to comprehend that final statement from Hough and Roberts. I think its insulting for them to say that the british people are ignorant over lenient sentencing. The fact that Bulger murderers are out and enjoying life is an absolute smack in the mouth to lenient sentencing. They should have never been let out, never mind have a good life when they got out.

Serious problem? But no worse than the 90's. Certainly no worse than "Back in the ancient times when someone was out of order it got dealt with efficiently and with a ruthlessness that deterred future criminals."

Oh, and you completely missed the Hough and Roberts point. People are quick to criticise the system "too leniant" - such as yourself - without knowing the full facts "crime is decreasing???", ie statistics - again, such as yourself.

ghost makes a good point about sentences though.

you try and get one over on the government, through avoiding taxes, or fraud to the tune of say, for arguments sake £25,000, and I will gaurantee you now, the average sentence is in excess of most sexual crimes and for the most part even manslaughter.

I know which way I'd rather see the harsh sentences given out!

I would say theres much more of an argument of the government being too leniant on such white collar crime.

But I do see your point

When I go to the cash machine, I look over my shoulder and im not looking for 'the media'.

That you and others can blame the media for the carrying of knives on the streets is a big part of what is wrong with so called 'great' britain.

Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

Are these reports independently ran? Or government based?

and what if this bloke was innocent.. then what?

Just some seedy dirty old fella, surely every neighborhood has one of them?

That's what I thought.

Yep, maybe he confused me with someone else?

Back to the justice thing. No doubt the victims of many vigilantes deserve the treatment they get. But the law cannot recognise that as fact. It must treat everyone as equal under its remit. Otherwise what is the point of law? If some of us are not provided with its protection, we're going down a very slippery slope indeed. Plus I do believe that the average vigilante is not sound of mind, and is probably criminally inclined himself. Obviously I do not intend this to mean revenge attacks by family members which are more than understandable. These people are not vigilantes at all in my book.
