Should Ferguson have stayed as a coach or should he have looked to manage elsewhere?

If he was serious about management, he'd have left years ago.

I don't think it makes much difference to our prospects either way if he stays or goes. I'm fine with him being part of the furniture, but then it's hard to be objective when you're of the wrote-to-him-in-prison generation.

Personally I'm glad Dunc has stayed on in some coaching capacity.
DCL has certainly learnt a lot from him and his passion for the club is unparalleled amongst his peers.
Like others on here though, I think if he is to manage us one day then he needs to go and prove his worth at another club first.
COYB!!!!

We need some continuity in the ranks otherwise have the dossers in the squad start with a free slate, and some don’t deserve that! However if that is Big Dunc or someone else behind the scenes I’m not sure. If he wants to manage he needs to leave but I’m sure Frank will assess what he needs etc. in due course.

Keeping Dunc around til summer to help the transition while Lampard eases his way in to the job could be a good thing. If Dunc left now he'd be unlikely to get another job until the summer anyway.

I'd love to see him go to a 1st or 2nd division club as manager and do really well. I guess Dunc's main problem is that he is such a diehard blue that he wants to stay. He'd probably rather be slicing the oranges at Everton rather than managing anywhere else.

I'm OK with him staying at the club as long as he's not holding us back which is something none of us can know. Unless you're on the training ground every day you haven't got a clue what Dunc contributes on a day to day basis.

I am not sure that he really wants to be a manager. He clearly loves being back within the club but it feels a bit like others convincing him to do things as opposed to him going out and hunting them down. Don't get me wrong, he is more of a blue than some of the pretenders on here who want to see us lose and get relegated will ever be.?

I suspect he will be off in the summer.

It's not the worst thing in the world to stick around to share his opinions on the squad and the new coaching team transition in.

Talk of him getting a gob on about being 'messed around' is all on him. He's shown a distinct lack of ambition to go and prove himself in a pressure role where the buck stops with him. For the past 6 (SIX!!!) managers before Lampard he's been able to shrug and say: 'wasn't me.'

He gets a ridiculous ammount of support because he was a talisman during a generally miserable period of our history. I'll never call him a legend because he achieved nothing. A sub appearance in our last cup triumph doesn't make a hero.

Don't get me wrong, the above makes it sound like I think he's a waste of space. I don't, but we have seen nothing to suggest he can be a top flight manager. Energy and commitment only gets you so far.

Go and see what you can do.

Duncan learning off top level experienced managers - yes
Lampard and Dunc - no.
Needs now to travel and achieve some targets/titles and then come back.

I think it's agood call for him to have remain on the coaching staff until the summer. The dangerous situation everton are in cannot be underestimated. Ferguson can help here. He was involved in a relegation scrap as a player and has the character and passion to help in this situation.

For himself as a potential manager it's time to go in the summer. If he wants to manage Everton one day he needs to gain the ups and downs of management and at his age needs to do so soon.
