Everton will look to sign Aiden McGeady on a pre-contract agreement in January rather than meet Spartak Moscow's demands for a transfer fee for the Republic of Ireland international.

McGeady is out of contract at the end of this season with Spartak and the Everton manager, Roberto Martínez, is a long-standing admirer of the 27-year-old, who he tried to sign for his former club Wigan Athletic last season.

Martínez wants to increase his midfield options when the transfer window reopens and moves for McGeady and Landon Donovan have been considered, with Everton interested in re-signing the USA international for a third loan spell.

But with Spartak seeking to recoup some of the £9.5m they paid Celtic for McGeady in 2010, Everton will explore the winger's willingness to sign a pre-contract deal instead. The midfielder was recently suspended from training with the first team at Spartak for an indefinite period by the coach, Valery Karpin, and has indicated he has no plans to sign a contract extension in Moscow.

The Guardian don't usually peddle tosh. suppose the 2 together make sense - Landon to fill the gap before McGeady comes in for free

I'd imagine Spartak will see reason and realise they have to accept something rather than get nothing 6 months later and Everton cough up about 2 million?

still personally hope its just a smoke screen whilst he goes for his real target, mcgeady i dont see as an imporvement, even squad wise really

If McGeady was free i'd not say no. Wouldn't want to spunk a transfer fee on top of the wages and signing on fee for him but not too bad on a free.

Fernando is on a free at the end of the season.

Might be something in this.
DAVID MOYES seemed to think he was done and dusted back on transfer deadline day and then suddenly nothing. If we could get him for a minimal fee in January and sign Barry instead (Who has been sensational) then it made sense to hang fire. We are right up there at the top end of the most watched league in the world and can pay a hefty wage.

Problem is that Man Utd may well go after him too. Apparently their manager has taken a look at Fernando in the past....

Manny Fernandes only has six months left on his contract at Besiktas, according to Transfermarkt. He turns 28 next February and hasn't played for Portugal since early 2012. I'd have him back, and the timing might be right for him to make a move in the hope of forcing his way back into international contention. He'd be great for rotation with Barkley, McCarthy and Barry.

I think this is key with whatever midfielder we bring in. It's gota be someone who can play all 3 of the CM roles (No's 4 8 10 if you will) basically we need a better younger version of Osman!
