Silly Season January 2014

He's actually the worst striker in the Stoke squad. Arnautovic has a bit of trickery and talent about him and puts a shift in, Walters is a work horse grafter with enough quality to justify his Premier League striker status, and Crouch is pretty bad but can hold the ball up well on occasion and lead the line, even though his best days are behind him. They've even brought in Agudelo and Guidetti this window, so he's now arguably considered the sixth best striker at Stoke. Stoke.

So you have to wonder, when we're looking to push for the top four, why are we looking at the worst striker Stoke have on the books to help the cause?

Are we really tho?

I think Hughes has pretty much confirmed that to be the case hasn't he? Said the media reports were true in regards to Jones texting his withdrawal from the squad and all but confirmed interest from Everton exists.

Too much smoke without fire with this for me. It's bizarre. I honestly think the only thing left to do here is to sort out a fee and it's done.

But I'm 100% certain it's a bad signing. There's no need to even wait and see with this one, it's just a stupidly bad signing - UNLESS we're taking on his contract until July and that's all, so that we're not short on strikers (so basically a Gareth Barry style loan but without it being a proper loan).

I don't think we even have the slightest interest in him. Hughes said he maybe thinking it's something there when there really isn't.

Typical Evertonian pessimism and negativity

We have RUMOURED interest in the likes of Batshuayi and Alcaser. . . but let's ignore that.
There is a RUMOUR of interest in Jones . . . so let's all take that as gospel then.

Here's an idea - Lets ignore ALL the RUMOURS and wait to hear something OFFICIAL.

What's the first word of this thread? Is it sensible? Is it pragmatic?

how can you be so calm and collected when WE'VE JUST BOUGHT KENWYNE JONES FFS !!!

If we got Jones for less than £1m, that is not a bad signing as a temporary solution. Essentially, he will be back up for 1st team, and play the same role Jelavic has for the majority of this season, but we will be £5-6m better off.

A lot of people had completely lost faith in Jelavic because of a bad year and a bit, and everyone agreed it was probably best for everyone he moved on, especially given the money we got for him. So if Jones comes in and plays as many minutes as Jelavic did, and scores as many goals, what have we really lost?

We could even be just what be needs to reinvigorate his career. Like a Rideout, Hutchison, Campbell type signing (im not saying hes as good as any of them BTW).

At the end end of the day, if we get him cheap, and he does do well, it will be a great signing. If we get him cheap and he doesn't set the world alight, we could still sell him and potentially make a profit, like with Beckford.

But seriously, what purpose will criticising him do before we've even actually bid for him, let alone before hes wore the shirt.

Im sure we'd all rather spend £20 on a Negredo or someone, but thats not going to happen this month, and if Martinez thinks signing a player to play backup for what will essentially be 4 months, so he can save his money and go for his real target in the summer (Lukaku? Rooney?), is it really such a bad thing?
