Can't stand the game myself, it's different now, a bit, but when I was going to school the only way you could play it was by paying for private education and fancy schools.

Yuppies game.

Guess that depends on where you were brought up. Down here, every comp school play rugby, and its not in a million miles a middle class elite sport. Its the sport of the working class. Same in Gloucester, and try telling folk in South Wales its a Tory sport.

As I said mate, not when I was growing up, it's changed a bit now but still definitely a bit upper class.

It may have more of a cosmopolitan (I'm not sure that is a word beyond Shepton Mallet)following in the west but then so does cheese rolling.
Your claim (admittedly taken out of context) is still fanciful. Interesting to compare socio economic groups at Twerton Park and The Rec for example.

I think you've missed @roydo's point that perhaps it was where you grew up, but in many places it's always has been and will be a working game.

Obviously there's always been an 'elite' (middle or upper class) element who've played it as well, however it's not purely them.

Some great games today, loved that try from the French lad and the final drop kick from the Irish. Every player looked as though he had but in a proper shift, blood all over the place........while our bleeding namby pamby players were rolling over for Arsenal and their players were diving and crying all over the shop.......

I'm from Ireland mate, but in my defense, I don't recall having used the word 'tory'.

Wot? You live in Bath. Not exactly a working class heartland.

In Bristol, the rugby clubs like Dings, Crusaders, Sharks are steeped in the working areas and populace of the city. I remember playing rugby at school against Lawrence Weston, Shire, Lockleaze, Hartcliffe schools. (usually getting thumped).

Yeah, QEH and Clifton College suck the top young players in, but to say rugby in Bristol, Gloucester and South Wales is a tory sport is plain nuts.

How is where I live relevant? Bath and Bristol have working class districts. I didn't say it "is a tory sport" , I was replying to your assertion that "it's the sport of the working class". Which, despite the fact that more working class kids play it, or are forced to play it at school in the West Country, it isn't.

It’s not upper class, it’s law abiding class. Football still gets a few scumbags, not that many but still a few, rugby rarely does.......
So, there are not many scumbags at Football and there are rarely ( but still some, not that many perhaps?) at Rugby.
Enlightening.

Tis. In Bristol, Gloucester, South Wales. Dont get confused with 6 Nations Twickenham beauts and the actual grass roots of the sport in parts of the world.

Well, perhaps we can agree to disagree on Bristol. I concede South Wales ( but don't consider it to be West Country) .
Gloucester is a dark and strange place, so, possibly.
