Slovakia vs. France uh I mean Italy

agree that you should out class that lot, but it is what it is...if its not offsides you were robbed and it cost you the game as I think you'd have bunkered up and gotten a draw.

That's football I guess, win some and lose some. 4 years ago everything was perfect. I don't expect them to go far this year, but not as bad as it is now.
Well at least I won't be torn in the 2nd round if Italy went through and face Holland, who is my 2nd favorite.

You are right, Italy use to produce flair players every now and then, the production line stop after Totti and Pirlo, non of our midfielder can ever get a place in the great era of 90s. There's no one with the abilities of Zola, Di Canio, Lentini, Donadoni etc in this team. The only one who came close is Rossi, I'm still puzzled why he was left out.
I believe the root of the problems is at their youth level.

Don't worry mate they will be back. England, France & Italy are going to have to freshen up next time. Youth is the key. The Germans are getting a leg up building a foundation for experience but are definately beatable. That said I am still scratching my head on the so called big named looking avarage to below average. You have to play the game nobody has the quaking in the boots fear anymore. A bad game and you hit the showers.

Antonio Cassano springs to mind, he has ridiculous ability, shame he's a bit mad. I'd have still taken him if I was Lippy though, it's worth the gamble on such a big stage, especially when you consider Italy's lack of flair and creativity in the final third.

Riccardo Motolivo flopped big time as Pirlo's understudy.

I see, unlucky mate, hopefully Italy will see some new players introduced over the next few years, I think the squad definitely needs freshening up.

You are right, this generation of Italian is very poor technically. I guess I have to wait for another 18 years for the next win.

I always thought of that Italian American Rossi as more of a Davies sort: short, fast, creative...

My thought is that he has to want to play for the US or its better he's left off...I wouldn't trust his heart if he was only playing for the yanks because he couldnt get on with the Italians.

He's fast but not Davies fast. He would get in quite a bit on the US team, and would probably play hard. I just don't think he or any 1 player out there would make us much better. I was never too arsed that he went to Italy though and I never thought it made him a "traitor". He was playing club ball there so it made sense for him and playing for Italy over the US is let's be honest, like choosing Man U over Fulham. If the MLS becomes a top 7 league and decides to play their players in actual money in the world someday, I'm sure we'll have a bunch of nationalized Brasilians on it like every other national team side.

I haven't seen much of Rossi this year, why was he left off? We probably could have used him with Davies hurt. However he would have a hard time unseating Davies if Davies comes back to full health. Altidore is raw but gives up a physical presence up front gives defenders fits he's always going to start. So I would see Rossi coming off the bench to sort of do what Feinhaber does. Though Feinhaber has had trouble on some of his club sides he's more than quality on the USMNT.

The thing about the American team its not about playing the best 11 (a team like England seems to pick players solely on their club form; Altidore was the least productive of our strike force at the club level) or taking the best 23 (if so Bornstein would have never gone). It putting the right players who can fit into what the team does best. So while Rossi would probably one of our more talented players he might not fit in with the US. He also reminds be a bit of Dempsey too and I'm not sure 2 Dempseys on the pitch is a good idea.

I don't know, it was quite a surprise to me and most of the Italian's I've spoken to that he was left out. Lippi left out a few players, Cassani was also left out, surprisingly.

Believe me, you'd fit a player of his qualities into your side. He has a good mix of creativity and goalscoring abilities. Unless your happy being plucky old USA, then there would be no point. He would improve your side though.

It's coming what I hear.
That's why it's so important the US keep getting the results and finding a way to keep the masses interested.
If you build it they will come.

quite shocked by both France and Italy... I suppose France was a bit of poetic justice given the way they made the tournament, and they had so many problems in the locker room... but I can't really explain away Italy's performance to anything but arrogance. Regardless of who is selected for the squad, they didn't play with any passion or a sense of urgency.

I'd like to think France were too ashamed to try to get out the group but I somehow doubt it.
