Joey, if you or your great horticulturist mate know of a proven, tried and tested remedy against whitefly, my missus would be eternally grateful ;) Her crop of Kale has been plagued with the little sods... and spraying them with garlic doesn't seem to work.[/QUOTE]
Try the new parisite
Have you got vampires on your crop toolol

Right seeing the EU have banned most chemicals shopwise when I retired as a grower of a 1/4 of million plants per year I used a Parasite on crops white fly loved it came on a card it hooked around your crop plant one plant every now and then it hatches out when your plant is in growth and as soon as white fly is spotted you would just hook the little cardboard clip full of hundreds of parasites that attacked the white fly by laying eggs inside it and eating them internally they are microscopic the eggs of the parasite and will eradicate them easily
Amazon product ASIN B00YE9XBH2also they may fly off and destroy any white fly in the area of the origin of it attacking your wife's kale I used it and the results were amazing on my 2 acre nursery site as I would put in on one crop and find other crops stayed clean because if they had food about the parasite minute bug would survive easily in a area white fly host on nettles etc.
a safe way for all pest control - every pest nowadays has a parasite - greenfly - vine weevil - etc
hope that helps seems expensive but should work follow the instructions and it will work pretty gruesome as kit lays its eggs in side the whitefly and keeps on killing the generations of them whitefly are hermaphrodites the reproduce with out needing a male that's why the quickly take over your crops hope that helps you;)

Hi Joey, re the Amazon advert... Is that purely for use inside a greenhouse?
My missus wants something for outdoor use on her allotment.

She's tried using a spray with garlic in, and she's tried a nettle solution previously but they didn't work.
Someone else has suggested making up a solution using soap, not washing up liquid... Have you ever heard of that being successful?

Cheers, Andy

Galic will only get rid of Vampires -right as I stated it may say only for greenhouse but if the white fly appears on your crop when the predator hatches out it is not going to avoid free food or this chemical below - use to directions but add 2 -3 ml of washing up liquid in your sprayer which acts as a spreader i.e. it sticks to the leaves spray upper, and under every leaf with a fine spray not a watering can a cheap litre had spray will do wear gloves, and a paper mask and it is only a contact spray ie only use when you see the white fly repeat every 7 days to get the eggs that will keep on hatching out stick to the exact ml per recommendation do not throw extra in to think you are killing them better your not your just in danger of burning your crop keep doing it until they reappear as I stated the white fly host itself on nettles they love them whitefly is always found on the underside of the leaves on any crop in a mass so spray there firsts and any that fly in the air spray on a dull calm day
I used them under glass , but I check local host like nettles in the hedgerows all around my nursery and the whitefly parasite will go where the food is even outside I agree its no good hanging the parasite on your cabbage if they are white fly free , but as soon as the appear they gobble them up and break the egg cycle !
The EU banned most chemicals for horticulture and Agriculture apart from a chemical called Temic that you place in your soil now they wonder why the bees are disappearing as that stuff is lethal and imo should not be used on food crops imo!
Back to cabbage it is usually cabbage white fly that lay caterpillars on them is the biggest problem - check your areas common ground if you have nettles etc near by as that will be the source of your white fly infestation also cabbage leave give of a lovely {to Pest} pungent smell that attract the blighters

Nettle solution provides Nitrogen to your plants- plant the herb comfrey plant that put the cut leaves in flower in a net place that in a tub with a lid on in the summer in full sun - your then have the best potash feed for tomatoes if you are growing them or hanging baskets for free , but be warned it smell like crap - you need a shower after diluting it a third to each watering can it honks! smells like silage
The nettle solution do the same no smell, but a prickly job, but great nitrogen feeder again a third of the solution to a watering can always have a lid on your solution in a large plastic 20 litre tub etc!
the comfrey plant grows as a beautiful herb with it high potash fertiliser leaves and flowers if you compost it in a container with a lid adding water for it to rot-

I'm being advised that a (smelly) Nettle solution also helps deter moles, the little furry animals not the itk types ;)
