Smart Meters

Forgive me if I'm wrong but isnt this the most expensive way of paying for your electricity?

It is - that's why I advis3d him to move from Ovo SSE,!

It no doubt is, but with me having physical and mental health issues, I found it easy and convenient to go to my local shop, get my key credited and then transfer that to my meter, where I could see how much credit etc. I have. Looking online I see reviews from people saying that when they've tried to top up their smart meter with the app and such, the transaction doesn't always go through and they end up receiving over-estimated bills etc.

Can only comment on the water side but what I will say is the utility provider better vet their meter manufacturer of choice and their use of technology because, if an underlying fault is found in the measuring hardware/billing system they may never recover from the fallout. 99.9% of utility co's (a high profit margin business) know this so, in the main, you shouldn't be paranoid. I'd be more worried about the vulnerabilities/weaknesses in the wider distribution system, with both power and water.

Does anyone on here have a smart meter fitted? My electric meter is on the blink (the display is blank so I have no idea how much credit is left and I can't top up) so ScottishPower is basically bullying me into having a smart meter installed.

Can anybody with one installed tell me what the installation process is and what I should expect, please? Is it a case of them removing one meter and replacing it with a new one, or does the "engineer" need to run safety tests on sockets and outlets etc.?

@Joey66, I recall you having trouble with yours a while back, how is it now? Any issues? Any advice you can give me?

If you arent paying for the smart meter to be fitted (if you rent) then no issue really. However you must provide internet connection for it to work. If you don't want a smart meter tell them you have no internet!

Although, if you are paying for the smart meter to be fitted (possibly free), you will be paying to replace it again in the future (5-10 years). Smart meters currently use 2g/3g connections.. These bandwidths will be shut down soon and the smart meters will need replacing.

I've always refused a smart meter. I've told them to stop asking me if I want one.

You don't have to, they are all to a lesser or greater degree dodgy as they are, there's a reason why electrical suppliers and governments want all households to switch over because they make extra money outta you in the long term
Oh and you know they’re collecting some obscure data on your house or something too

My aunt who is 90 next month lives in a flat Ovo fitted a smart meter about 2 months ago which suits her because her bills are negligible.
2 people turned up and they were there about an hour and a half,
The power was turned off the whole time they were there.
They do safety checks and testing as part of the process.
They will replace your old meter with smart meter and give you a small monitor (size of a biggish phone) so you can see what its costing you.
You need to make sure you have clear access to the meter.
All done cleanly and efficiently in an hour and half.
P.s shes DD

I moved into a flat 2 years ago and there was a Scottish Power PAYG meter fitted which I had to use a key, topped up at the PO, to top up. I swapped to British Gas and asked for a smart meter to be fitted. The swap took about an hour, and I have a small monitor so I can see what I'm using. I top up using an app on my phone which suits me. The only glitch I had was just after it was fitted BG emailed me to say that my direct debit payment was being set up! I phoned up and asked WTF they were talking about as it's a PAYG account  . They checked up and admitted their mistake.

Not a conspiracy theorist by any means, I have enough trouble spelling it, however here's my take, you tend to hear more bad than good about them.
I've managed to avoid them up to now and will continue to ignore the pressure to have one fitted.
