Mate, back in the '80s Celtic and Everton were pretty well linked. Before that I would presume there were links when we kind of became the catholic club of choice on Merseyside (not intending on opening the catholic/protestant debate again).

Any of the old farts on here remember the scally hats that were half Celtic, half Everton, probably started around '85ish?

And Celtic do indeed sing Grand Old Team (y)
I think it was earlier John, remember the Celtic-Rangers chants at the games.

I remember one derby day and and all the wee scallies turned up in their Celtic/Everton bobble hats. Over the other side (Park End) a number of the RS had on their Rangers stuff. I think they spent the whole match taunting one another (very friendly of course, being the '80s ).

I have to say I was surprised when I found out that we were not officially the catholic club. I was brought up under the impression that we were green, they were orange.

Shows the urban myths that can spring up and how it can effect the consciousness. But still, I can't help but think of us as being linked with Celtic, even though it appears plainly false these days.

Oh, I'm from a mixed family and have no feelings or affiliation to either sect myself. Just in case anyone thought I was promoting a sectarian divide. b)(y)

I am fully aware of the half Celtic/Everton hats in the 1980's, i was in my heyday as a blue when they was out. Everton and Celtic are both catholic teams but religion does'nt come into things with me. Times change and the relationship between the RS and Celtic have grown stronger over the years.

Well I lived in Scotland for over 10 years and most Celtic fans I knew had a preference for Everton. Perhaps at club level you're right. But not at fan level.

Was told by a Celtic fan that when they played Liverpool, the angle revolving around the 'friendly' nature of their fans and the dual singing of YNWA was overstated. Ok, both sets of fans sing that but he said there was trouble in a nearby pub to CP when RS fans chanted Orange ditties. According to him, there are a lot of Celtic fans with a liking for us.
