Someone?
Anyone?
Surely between us we can conjure up some optimism, no matter how misplaced.
I spent all last season depressed with Everton, usually we at least con ourselves a bit we're in for a good season.
How about...
- We signed Deulofeu. He's alright, isn't he?
- Cleverley. Not fashionable, but I reckon he could pleasantly surprise.
- Alcaraz and Distin have gone.
- We'll benefit from continuity.
- No Europa excuse/distraction.
- We've not lost a big player.
- We've still got time to buy. Martinez in May: “But now our business could happen in a much smoother manner and we will try to do it as quickly as we can with some of our targets. Others we will try to bring in late because of the type of player that we need to bring in".
- Cleverley only has to be above average to count as a decent transfer, because he was free. If he's better than that then Martinez can take some real credit.
- Alcaraz leaving was brilliant news. He was a shocking failure of a player. I wouldn't have been sad to see Distin stay though. Easily one of my favourite players in the last ten years.
- Can't agree with you on the EL point. The games against Wolfsburg in particular were brilliant, and with a deeper squad we could do very, very well in that tournament.
- Keeping all our big names is great news.
- I hope Martinez rediscovers his touch in the loan market. He did a cracking job in this area during his first year, and we have several youngsters coming through who might not be ready for 40 prem-level games yet. This brings me onto the final point:
- Garbutt. He's signed long-term and we've immediately done the right thing by sending him out on loan to a promotion-chasing Championship side. I honestly believe this season will be the making of this lad, just like the year at Blackpool was for Coleman. This is a blueprint for how we should be developing our younger players as they reach 18, 19, 20 years old and if we can get a couple more out doing the same then the medium-term future I think will be greatly improved.
