We probably deserved to get through to the semis just as much as we did in 90', if we are being honest but we (and rightly so) look back fondly on that tournament.
Tournaments is not always about destroying the opposition, it is game management, getting yourself through to give you a chance of winning.
France were awful at the start but managed their way through brilliantly once they needed to. This is what this and many, many England sides have not been able to do. We may have managed the group (in most cases) but then struggled after that where the better teams start to ramp it up.
I also don't get this set piece thing as if it is a negative. If you don't score from set pieces it is considered a flaw (like us against Fulham with all the corners) and if you do score a decent amount then it is considered a negative. A goal is a goal and set pieces are a massive part of the game, whether it be direct or building the play from that corner/free kick/throw in/etc.
Also, the didn't play anyone of note argument. People say that as if it is the players fault for playing the opposition as they came (although remember Sweden this is the team that finished ahead of Germany and beat Italy in the play offs, you can argue about the quality of that opposition but if England came up against them we would not be considered favourites). In 2002, Germany got to the final playing Ireland, Saudi Arabia (8-0) & Cameroon. They then beat Paraguay, USA & South Korea to get to the finals. It would be interesting to know how much stick they got for having an easy ride and then getting beat by the 1st decent side in the tournament.
For me it was the attitude of the team that was so refreshing, Southgate brought an U21 mentality to the team. A team willing to work for each other, no egos, nobody demanding respect but trying to earn it. Players just going out to play football as best they can. If we can continue with that mentality then we have a chance to develop these young players, even if they have to drop levels to get regular football (for now).
