Southgate and England

It's on these kind of days that I'm thankful for not being English. Doesn't he have a contract until the Euro's? Surely after that you can sit down and talk about a new contract...oh hang on, forgot Real Madrid might want to poach him in the meantime.

I think it is more a statement of intent and confidence. As in, we believe that you can set up the future. Being an England manager is more than just about the first team, it is overseeing the structure of English football.

Just look at how long Low has been in charge and the continued (until this year) success he has had. Continuity breeds familiarity so I think it a very good public showing that this is what we are trying to achieve.

It has nothing to with clubs poaching him, in my opinion.

He is a safe pair of hands but the England job is still one of the most attractive in world football. Why settle? I think 2 tournaments would have been enough of a crack at it for Southgate.

Get what you say in regards to continuity and to a point I agree but he is not going to bring home a trophy and you might well say no one could and that would probably be also correct, but I think others could come in and do a better job especially seeing by that time he would have been manager for 6 years and things can go stale.

Fair point, maybe he is not the man for the job but the whole attitude has changed and he is solely responsible for that so I personally have no issues (wait until the next set of internationals :)) with him being the man given the task to giving a bit of a consistent level of pride in the team.

Awful manager, but based on the World Cup you can argue he deserves a new one. It’s a crap argument, but he did make it further than most (against plenty of lesser sides). It was a lucky tournament for them, and I’m kind of upset that he didn’t hold out for United lol

Gone are the days where you'd have to put in time of hard work and produce a couple of years of good form before getting a call up. I mean barkley and winks? Jeez, I don't think either have contributed a goal or an assist this season?

The problem with that is who gets in ahead of them mate?

New contract for Southgate with England. That’s England not winning anything for a while then. In my opinion he’s a lucky guy to get that job with the salary. Everyone talks about the last World Cup and how well we did. Let’s be honest most of our goals came from set pieces, we were very lucky with the draw and as soon as we played anyone decent we got beat.
But he's not going to turn it down is he?

As if appointing Southgate puts paid to England’s chances of winning something, as if to say that they’d have a chance anyway.

Not arsed about the World Cup or how he picks young players, when we play a decent team we lose. Nothing has actually changed in the slightest.
