any experts who can laymen term this?

The sun could be entering a new cycle (perfectly normal). It'll either be more active than it has been or it won't be (depending on which scientist you want to listen to).

In short, it's only a big deal for the nerds.

I'm really pleased for him. Persevering aftet multiple setbacks and massive budget/time overruns.

However, edge of space isn't space space, is it?

Nope. James May went there in some bomber or observation plane a while back. It must be amazing, but plenty do it in military aircraft.

Think Virgin Galactic go a fair bit higher than any military plane…. The James May flight was in a U2 @ 80,000ft iirc, Unity flew to 282,000ft (57miles above sea level). The dispute what constitutes ‘space’ is over whether not going beyond the Kármán line at 67miles which is where Blue Origins commercial space flight go, can be classes as true space flight.

I think I’m missing something here, Branson went up 50+ miles, I always thought ‘Space’ started at 62 miles…..

Space is the Karman Line at 100km. You don't go past that, you aren't in space.

In most people’s eyes correct but some influential space agencies consider the altitude Virgin go to as space, most notably NASA who consider anyone who flys at the altitude Unity went as Astronauts. All semantics really as any space tourist want weightlessness, a veiw of the curvature of the earth and to be in the darkness of ‘space’ which they get with both Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin.

The outer space act from the cold war in the 60s defined space as above 100km

So again, if you don't go above 100km, you aren't in space.

As far as what's an astronaut question(which I wasn't answering in my post), that is anyone who travels in a space vehicle, not necessarily go into space.
