James Webb rescheduled again to Christmas Day, lunchtime in the UK, I'll be watching.

Separated from its final stage and deploying solar array (I'm watching this happen live from an on board camera), its got power and is now on its way past the moon and into deep space.

Absolutely awesome event, a Christmas gift to humanity and a testament to what can be achieved when we set incredible goals, cooperate internationally and stop being short-term, profit driven twerps.

You can follow JWST's progress here:

Its coming up on 20% of the distance into its journey traveling at about a mile per second, should hurtle past the moon at some point tomorrow.

Primary mirror now unfolded, JWST is now deployed in its final configuration and continuing on its way to L2 orbit nearly a million miles from home. It'll spend several weeks cooling, focusing the mirrors and such then its ready to go.

Its hard to understate the complexity of this machine and the design, research and testing dome over decades to achieve this. Just to give some idea of the scale, here's the sunshield:

And the mirror:

Well done shaved monkeys, we've done something wonderful for a change. Kick ass spaceship.
