Space and stuff

I have followed the Voyager missions, not literally, and love it. How they made one take a photo of the Solar System, with a little blue spot being earth, and how in the mid 60s they worked out when it would pass over the North Pole of Uranus using graph paper and slide rules. Like decades later. They were 8 seconds out.
Amazing when you think about it. And they are still going, and one has left the Solar System, and they can still talk to it.

they got it wrong then

It (space exploration and associated science) is magnificent, the best advert for science - and the best argument against organized religion - there is.

It is just a massive shame that since humanity started to take its first steps into the unknown that almost all of the money has been controlled by politicians, who have managed to cut funding (even the last three Apollo lunar missions were cancelled) and yet have spunked vast sums on many things far less vital to the future of mankind.

Always thought the best thing to do with politicians/religious leaders is to fly them into space. As they got higher, they would point out their countries, then their continents, then eventually the whole globe. They would see a fragile lump of rock, alone and unique, and the petty rows and disagreements they preside over might seem less important to them.

Aye, that's probably my favourite ever photo. Followed by the sunrise on Mars.

I'm currently studying Physics and Astronomy in Liverpool Uni, as it goes.

Good on you mate.

Love reading about astrophysics & cosmology but, unfortunately, my old brain can't quite get around more than the absolute basics of the subjects. I've been very fortunate with work and travel though and if you do get the chance, go to Chile, the Nullarbor Plain or Mauna Kea - the night skies are staggering.

Good luck with your degree course.
