It (space exploration and associated science) is magnificent, the best advert for science - and the best argument against organized religion - there is.

It is just a massive shame that since humanity started to take its first steps into the unknown that almost all of the money has been controlled by politicians, who have managed to cut funding (even the last three Apollo lunar missions were cancelled) and yet have spunked vast sums on many things far less vital to the future of mankind.

Think you need to take off those rose-tinted "in the name of science" glasses a bit.. the Space Race was as much cold war politics as anything!

Agreed there we need another cold war hopefully with the aim of getting to mars first

That was certainly why the politicians were convinced (or actively conned, in the case of Korolev and his R7 rocket) into spending the money, but what was achieved in the golden age of space exploration went far beyond mere politics. Just look at the reception that Gagarin got when he toured the west, or how he - and the rest of the men and women who went into space during that era - are still viewed by most people.

so where was the big bang? as in where is the oldest part of the universe and as its an ever expanding universe where is it expanding from?

ive heard the one theory that it was one big bang every where at once but i still cant get my head around that as there has to be a start/spark point to a bang doesnt there?

I gave up trying to understand "space" mate. Reason is simple. You cant.

We are 3 dimensional creatures. You know if someone is 6 ft 9in tall, just by looking at them. You tell a fatty from a skinny, and that an 8ft pool is better to dive into than the shallow ends. Height, width, depth, we get it without knowing how we get it. But the 4th dimension, time, is what "space" is all about. So we just cannot ever really understand it, cos it is a measurement, or is measured in time really.

Thats why, on a Friday, we all think, "ace 2 days off, that will be ace". So we think how long 2 days are, but how often do you think "christ, where have the last 20 years gone?" We just cannot think in terms of time.
