I find kids these days write words the way they speak them.....it all boils down to education and the falling standards........

"Bring back the cane" MWMWWMMAAAAAWHHHHAAA

Not too long ago I received a CV from a young lad with a mix of English and text speak. It took me a while to translate, but it was actually a good CV and the lad got an interview.

I sometimes wonder about the standards of teaching, not that I was ever any good at school, but how and when did text speak become intergrated in standard written English.

I sound like the sort of old fool that I used to laugh at, I know all language evolves, but shouldn't standards be better. There is a place for text speak and a place for a more formal language.

By the way, the young lad was offered a job with us but took another job for more money elsewhere. So what do I know?

We all balls up occasionally with our spelling, especially when we're trying to type quickly enough to get the thoughts from our heads onto the page before we lose track, but is it just me, or is there a common deficiency in the use of the English language amidst forum dwellers regardless of site?

Some common examples:

There / their / they're.

Our v are.

Too / to / two.

Where / we're / wear / were.

Let's have a GOT grammar awareness day.:lol:

that's the one that bugs me the most, and it's more a regional mistake, we say it as "are" but it seems a lot actually think that it is that instead of "our". there was even a banner that had the mistake on, now if that doesn't make our support look like a bunch of melts i dont know what does.
if you keep on seeing words spelled wrong then you do start to spell it wrong as well, i've found that i doubt myself having typed a word in correctly, just as i also start to type things in the way that i keep seeing them on here.

Personally i dont care as long as i can understand what is being said. And text speak is actually pretty easy to understand most of the time if you dont just look down on it. If people make the same mistakes with the same words all the time i blame the complexity of the english language:-)

Yeah, i've never seen the are/our 'misspelling' on any other site. The ultimate net ones are 'teh', 'liek' etc. Largely I think it's to do with lazyness and people typing quicker than their brains can keep up with!

Your and you're seems to be the most common one, along with there and they're. It's rampant all over the internet though, not just GoT.

I can handle it...what gets me is "what r u doing?" and other text-speak cr*p like that. That nonsense does my head in...
Have to agree being a spelling nazi's just isnt cool man..but by jebus talk text crap and feel my wrath

I use Internet explorer, but I believe from the odd time that I use Firefox that it has an automatic spell check system.
My spelling is nowhere near as good as it used to be, simply for the fact that as I have aged, my need to write has diminished, especially as I'm now self employed ( please someone give me a job that pays money every week ).
I tend to type words into Google if I'm unsure of a words spelling, or even it's meaning, so I cheat a little, but for the sake of a few seconds, it prevents giving out the impression that I'm thick, even if I may be accused of that occasionally anyway.

Like I wrote earlier, we all make mistakes, but it's good to at least make an effort, even if only out of respect for the reader.

some of it isn't about spelling, it's about getting it wrong.

examples -

'are team are the best' - it's OUR team

'them players are rubbish' - it's THOSE players

'we could of beat them' - we could have beaten them

'we was the best' - we were the best

there are plenty of other examples of bad grammar but these are by far the most frequently used.
yes, I'm a pedantic old bag who is bordering on being a grammar fascist but it's not difficult to use the correct words.

I blame Thatcher meself like:D

agreed. for example, you probably would be, but im not arsed about me typing like this because i havent actually done anything positively wrong. ive just missed out punctuation. likewise txt speak. as long as you dont just use the wrong words or put apostrophes in the wrong places etc, doesnt bother me.

Please tell me you deliberately wrote that post in such a way.
