I think the poor spelling and use of text speak is a combination of lazy teaching/teachers who don't care, and the 'progress' of our language. Just think what the people of three or four generations ago would have made of our vocabulary now. Around thirty five years ago, my mother took great delight when I told her the latest buzz words, ie weeker, meaning good or wick, meaning not so good. In a nutshell I think it is a cultural thing which may mean that text speak is the future,,,,,, I sincerely hope not.

It is no longer restricted to text these days.
I regularly hear people say things like lol in real life. It wouldn't surprise me to find it in the New Oxford dictionary.

my mrs asked me what it means as her mate keeps putting it in texts, in inappropriate places. like, sorry 2 hear your dad is not well, speak soon lol.
apparently she thinks it means lots of love.

Oh oh

My daughter types it at rediculous speed whilst on MSN Messenger. It's like some carefully planned code to stop dads turning the pc off mid way through the conversation.

i blame jamie redknapp for his use of fwee when talking on sky.
i find myself saying that was a fwee kick wefewee when there's footy on sky.
i'm also guilty of using lol but i blame my sisters kids,my relatives and friends because i use it texting although i can't understand there texts when they type like dey iz kool.(n)
