Star Wars - Episode VII

Seen it 3 times now! Like it more each time I think :) First time I was quite critical, but the more I see it the less the -ves affect me and the more I can appreciate all the good things about it.

Referential
Like the originals, I loved it. I'm hard to please. If I was hyper critical, it copied a new hope quite a bit but added a bit extra.

Its set up nicely for new films just hope they're a bit more original with the next ones
i can see them going along the the lines of rey and ren being brother and sister and ren having the conflict between good and bad like Vader did.

The stand alone films have the potential to be the best ones imo

Sums it up well for me, it was well done, very proffessional, but not all that original to be considered a great film, perfectly enjoyable though

Far too many references to the original trilogy to my liking. JJ said he cut some out as well, original cut must have been absolutely loaded with them.

People don't seem to like how similar it is to the older movies. That's exactly why I like it. And exactly where Lucas went wrong with the prequels.

Personally I enjoyed most of the bits that referenced or were similar to the originals, although first time round I felt it did go a little too far with the similarities towards the end - the Starkiller base attack and plan. Would have liked it better maybe if they'd just disabled/destroyed the weapon and not the whole planet. Most of the references before that I enjoyed (like when Finn activates the chess table and picks up the 'training ball' on the Falcon), and thought that the early story arc echoed, but was different enough from A New Hope to be familiar but not repetitive. As Jalen Rose used to say on Grantland, "You've got to give the people what they want!"

Also, does a film have to be original to be considered great? Tarrantino's films are massively referential/unoriginal, but he is considered one of the great directors of our time. I'd certainly prefer a good unoriginal film over one that was original but average/poor.

Ending
Also.
The end scene was very theatrical and quite crap, Luke on an island? Wtf. Was painful to watch that bit.

Apart from that ending swoop thing

Was a bit weird. How boss did Luke look though? Full of power, and sorrow. He looks like he could fck things up!

Yeah, helicopter shot wasn't great. Guess they thought they couldn't end the film on a closeup of Luke's face? Don't know.

He knows, he felt it like Leia. I reckon that explains the sorrow, amongst other stuff. Snoke's gonna get rekt.

Also, Luke. He's standing at a grave at the end. I'm positive that's a tombstone. Who, his wife? How did she die? That make Rey his daughter, was she hidden from whoever killed his wife maybe?

Thought the ending was quite good, but Luke's expression was a bit weird, like he was trying to look sad or resigned, but couldn't get it quite right. Feel like he felt Han's death, and knew that Rey arriving with his 'sabre meant bad things had gone down. Agree with the shot being a bit long, maybe could have ended after we first see him turn around and look at her, then she holds it out.

Had a look during my last watch but couldn't decide if it was a tombstone at the end. It could be, but would be a very rough/unmarked grave if it is.

Casting/Characters
Can't help but think they wanted Keira Knightley but she was busy, so they went for a lookalike instead.

Haha, she does look very similar, and when Finn was trying to drag her around that camp on Jakku it very much reminded me of KK in PotC.

Problems: Few characters felt underused, Captain Phasma comes to mind in particular.

Phasma gets treated like a little bish in this. Does nothing of consequence except getting punked by Finn and forced lower the sheilds. Terrible use of what promised to be, and was marketed as a Bad Ass character (though the latter is not really JJ's fault/not the first time we've seen that happen)

Thoughts:

Snoke is Darth Plaguios (sp?). Mentioned in the prequels by Sideous to Anakin at the opera music show thing about how he discovered immortality. Sure he might have got knocked over the head in his sleep by Sidious, but he's immortal right? Would explain the massive scar in his head too. He's been waiting in the shadows regaining his strength, letting Sidious do all the hard work.

I liked him though. Like proper evil. He looked crazy old but you know he's got powers. All the powers.

Looks like a less crazy, more powerful Gollum. Have seen theories about Snoke being Plaguios, tbh I don't even remember the name so who knows, but it seems to be the popular opinion.

Overall
I do too mate. But I can easily look past them. I can't even be bothered to mention them because i enjoyed it so much.

I gave it 4.5 Championship Belts out of 5.

But very few get the 5.

Well, it was good. Can't be arsed going through this thread now, but I'm sure my comments will be similar. It was a JJ Abrams movie, which isn't bad. Probably, it was the kick in the teeth this saga needed to wake up. Looking forward to Episode VIII and how the saga will develop the story of these characters.

I think it's very good overall. Nearly got the balance of referencing the originals just right, but for me the pace was a bit fast. Would have liked a bit more exposition and time for the story to develop in the middle of the film, but it's not a major gripe for me having seen it again. 4 crossguard lightsabers out of 5 for me.

Toys
Oh yeah, @rascal (I think), how much was your BB8 droid? I want one badly.

There's defo a bunch of stuff going on my birthday list!

Future
Only thing is, where do they go from here like? They've destroyed the new Death Star, they've found Luke, can't see them getting 2 films out of what's left

Kylo Ren needs to be turned back to the light. Snoke and the First Order are still at large. We need to learn just what exactly Luke has been doing for the last 30 years. Also, who Rey is and why she's so powerful (and fit)? I reckon she might fall to the darkside in the next one. Also who's Snoke, how did another Dark Lord arise in the wake of The Emperor and Vader dying?

Don't reckon Rey is going to the dark side, she is angry as hell with a lightsaber though!

I'm also certain she's Luke's daughter. She has to be related to someone and who else could it be? Didn't notice the grave but I'm watching it again tonight so I'll keep a look out for that. I've also heard the Plagueis (spelling according to google) theory, would be cool.

I think Rey will turn though, only because the sequel is set up to parallel Empire in some ways, so I think they'll make her turn to keep things different, which they probably need to do considering that VII rehashes IV just a bit too much.

I hope she doesn't, she seems incredibly pure, innocent, strong and a fantastic lead, the movie should turn towards Ren's struggle against the light. Hopefully anyway.

Even if VIII is a remake of V, I think I'll be happy. I assumed going in that Rey was Han and Leia's daughter, and then later that they were siblings, but now it seems almost certain that she's Luke's daughter. Can't see her turning to the dark side, but mainly because I assume the story develops as her struggle against her cousin Ben. I assume Ben's light side struggle continues to be a story, but looks like he buried that in VII.

I think the next film will concentrate on Ren and Rey's training in opposing sides of The Force and (equivalent?) challenges they both have to overcome, whilst the Resistance/First Order rebuild and prepare for the next big battle. Don't see either of them being turned, and tbh I agree after the end of this one, don't reckon either will be much tempted.

Think Rey is more likely to be Luke's daughter than Han and Leia's, as I think it would be weird for them not to mention it after all the heartache over their son, but that would be against the Jedi code, so very well could be unrelated to any well known characters. Also think that whilst TFA was very actioned packed, pacey and followed a similar story arc to ANH, VIII will be slower, with more 'story' and difference to ESB.

Fwiw I think Ep VII-IX will stick quite closely to the feel/theme's of the original trilogy. Rogue One and the other stand alone films will give us the opportunity to see something that is more different, but still set in the Star Wars universe.

Trailer
Also, a few scenes in the trailers were cut? Like in the first trailer when Rey jumps on her landspeeder in a hurry or when someone (an alien) hands Leia Luke's old lightsaber? Unless I forgot those scenes.

Think there were lots of bits of the trailer that were different, or not directly representative of the film, but could it have been Maz's? Don't remember it being orange tho - always thought it was Luke or Leia or someone like that...

I like your style phil

Had an absolute nightmare. Me and my dad had planned to go and see it for nearly 8 months. He pulled out last minute and I had to go by myself. On my way into the cinema I dropped my phone and cracked the screen. Finally half an hour into the film I fell asleep and I woke up right at the end. Ah well, tomorrow's a new day

I don't know how to mate, il just edit the post ha
when you post, you get all the little icons, like picture, smiley face and that

well next to the film clips icon, there's one called insert, and you insert a spoiler, and type your post within that x

Wtf LOL

The new movie is a nightmare with the number of toys it's spawned for the warehouse I'm working in.
Nevermind the movie, they'll make millions off the toys and rights alone.
