Yes, yes they did, they saw a complete remake of the original film. I cannot put spoilers on here but if you have seen it, think about the similarities between the two, it's so stark.
I felt utterly let down, I wanted a new film and continuation of the series not a recap.

i have seen it,i can see the criticisms and understand them, but i dont think you can call it a failure as so many people(including critics) loved it. unlike the prequels which where universally panned, comes down to personal choice with this one, personally think the homage and flipping elements was clever

Thought the film was great to be honest. I liked how they introduced new characters but also had the same retro feel about it, I don't just mean the return of the old characters, I mean the whole resistance set up, keeping a lot of the original designs for the tie fighters and stormtroopers, they could of done a lot worse and simply repackaged the whole thing.
Take transformers for example, we were getting into the characters and what each brings to the table, to then just kill everyone off and start with new characters, by time you get into the new characters the series is over again. One thing I did find a little 'meh' was how much Kylo Ren is based on Anakin Skywalker, at one point it looks like ren is Anakin from behind with the hair and dress up.

Aye, I completely agree. It was essentially a remake, and once you realized what the main plot device would be, any and all tension or sense of danger was sucked out of proceedings because we've seen it twice before. I thought it was a fairly strong first half, but massively disappointing in the second. Not unlike Everton performances this season.
It does. The dramatic impact of a plot is severely diminished if you've seen almost the exact same storyline twice before in the same series of films.

the inversion of the inner conflict is interesting, but it was really the only way they could go with what is essentially a binary concept - light to dark and now dark to light, also was that marilyn manson as han solo's kid?

Ha! Tbh I didn't like Return of the Jedi, it happens to be my least favourite Star Wars film, and a lot of that owes to the type of lazy scripting that has spoiled this new installment for me.
The film did a lot of things right, but in the same way the prequels weren't half as bad as people made them out, this one isn't half as good as people are describing it. That being said, I thought the lead actors, especially Fin, were top notch. Flipping the light-to-dark thing on its head was clever, the sets and scenery were beautiful and the opening scene was immense. That final third though...
