And my point is, if it didn't have the Star Wars name, the film wouldn't have been "a cheap copy of a great film", so that argument is irrelevant.

Apart from being totally relevant to me and, in time, many more will form the same opinion. Behind the big box office film in question is nothing more than a remake, that will be it's legacy in my opinion.

Yeah, I'm sure there is a certain amount of rose tinted glasses going on with it, which will fade with time, and for me I did feel like it was cut too close to the cloth the first time I saw it, but actually didn't mind so much after repeated viewings, and enjoyed it more each time. Like I said in my OP tho, I do feel if the end had been different that would have made it stand out enough. Still for me it's largely just about different enough to make it really enjoyable with/despite the similarities...

I think you are right about the legacy , once the hype dies down it will be exposed as a lazy rehash with weak story and characters.
put it this way I bet you the hype and build up the next one will be full of scepticism and fans hoping for a better movie.
They wont admit it but deep down they know there are flaws.

I would like to see the Sand People form a band and the next movie is an 8mm hand held camera shot fly on wall documentary about them recording an album and going on tour around the galaxy complete with video diaries , artistic differances and rock star meltdowns.

Maybe its harsh as it is entertaining , clever and funny at times.
I would love to see Christopher Nolan get a pop at a Star Wars trilogy. Bring some darkness back into it.

To be honest the Star Wars holiday special had more 'surprises' and less plot holes as well.
