When the original episode IV was made, Lucas has no idea at the time if it would be successful or not, so he had no idea if he could make the full trilogy that he had always planned. So that is why when we see the dialogue between Ben & Luke why Kenobi's slightly awkward delivery to Luke and the shift in his countenance when he tells him about his father is so devastatingly effective. Equally so with Vader spinning off into the cosmos at the end - it had to all be subtle as the film would have to stand alone complete by itself. There wasn't even any mention of an Emperor, who was only given mention in the ESB. There is no expansion of the Skywalker family connections in the movie, because Lucas hasn't yet even invented them, and indeed he even commissioned a book "Splinter of the Mind's eye" to continue the story in the event that the film bombed.
Contrast that to VII, where there is no closure or resolution on absolutely anything because of the grand plans that have already been set in stone for the 3 films (and all the spinoffs). Who cares if the suncrusher base was destroyed? You know that it's of little consequence to the trajectory of the next films. In the final sabre duel, there was absolutely NO threat, as you knew these characters would all be back for the sequel. Sure enough, the ground opens at the most opportunistic moment to intervene and make sure that we can have sabre duel II next time around. Did anyone think we wouldn't be seeing Poe again after the crash landing?
And lastly, from the amount of screentime Han Solo was getting, it was blindingly obvious that he was going to be killed off! Shame, they should have killed him off at the beginning and given more screen time to Max Von Sydow's character.
Those who say Episode VII sets the the new trilogy magnificently... come on, people!! This isn't a trailer, this is the film itself! I want a story to be told here, one that can stand up by itself, not a teaser for the next episode.
