Star Wars - Episode VII

it's gonna be rubbish. Modern Hollywood action films are utter crud. I gave them a last chance recently when my new laptop came with a 3D screen. So I thought I'd check out the big movies that would show it off. Went for:

Pacific Rim (the worst film i've ever seen, with not even coherent action to make up for the mess)
Star Trek: Into Darkness (predictable, laboured, stupid...no heart in it at all, as bad as the previous one)
The Hobbit (no sense of drama or danger, forced 'audience-pleasing' jokes, no memorable characters, too much CGI)
World War Z (the only film from this quartet that I tolerated watching. Still stupidly simple and cliched)

Compared to recent past, we had much more entertaining blockbusters: Lord of the Rings trilogy, while sometimes dour, was a decent watch first-time round. 2012 as disaster movies go was stupid but it was thoroughly entertaining. The classic Trek films of First Contact, Undiscovered Country, the whale one, Wrath of Khan and The Motion Picture are still brilliant even after rewatches.

The original Star Wars trilogy too. The prequel trilogy obviously not.

I fear the worst for the new Star Wars films because these modern blockbusters are ultra-successful. So the studios are bound to play it ultra-safe, where every character has to be an obvious archetype with the same tired old traits that everyone's supposed to identify with.

Star Wars could really do with a proper character-led story (check out the story and characters from Knight of the Old Republic. Best Star Wars characterisation since Empire).

I've kept off this thread in case of spoilers
I went the other day. It was good, but not 'all the hype ' good it had many of the key items of IV aka the real one, poor kid get in trouble, gets out, gets in more trouble, gets out bit, of a rehash. Miles to go yet with 2 more to come

Will I keep watching... more than likely.....*edit; which is what they want really.

on a personal note do they have to have the surround sound THAT loud.

Saw this on the weekend. It was OK I suppose. It was never going to live up to the hype.

Also, spoiler alert, but Kylo Ren is the worst big girls blouse for a villain ever.. lol

Why wasn't BB hungry?

Because BB-8

Watched it a week ago then read back through the thread (swerved it for spoilers).

Miles better than the prequels but not as good as the originals. There were a few things that didn't feel quite right to me but overall I thought it was boss and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Oh and @Donald Twain - sniff it.

Went to see it again last night and enjoyed it even more this time....

Question on Rey...

Lots speculating that she must be Luke's daughter.....it's of course possible...but I don't get it....why was she abandoned at 5 years old on a crappy planet.....why would Luke have done that (or if it's a daughter Luke didn't know he had why would Rey's mother have done that?)....and she wasn't even left with a family....seems to me, whoever left her on that planet wanted to disown her, or really wanted to hide her away out of fear of what she might be capable of.....which makes me think maybe she has a link to Emperor Palpatine, perhaps his grand daughter?......
So the story could be Kylo Ren from a Jedi background turning to the dark side, and Rey from a Sith background becoming a Jedi

i don't think Rey is Luke's daughter either. Just can't see it. It would raise questions about who is the mum and so on but I just can't see it.

And it would be fairly unimaginative too....if she ends up being a Skywalker, they're pretty much saying only Skywalkers have the force (even though 60 years earlier there were loads of Jedi's)......hopefully it's turns out to be a good twist (like Vader & Luke), I think after playing it safe with FORCE Awakens, the next film needs to stand out on its own
