Farhad Moshiri, Everton’s main shareholder, is facing important decisions over the future of the manager Sam Allardyce and the club’s director of football Steve Walsh.
The second anniversary of Moshiri buying a 49.9 per cent stake in the club was marked yesterday with uncertainty around what his plans are. Everton have spent £270 million since his arrival but their hopes of infiltrating the Premier League’s top six this season have been brutally exposed.
Allardyce replaced Ronald Koeman after David Unsworth’s interim spell in charge, but his appointment has left supporters disillusioned and Moshiri is considering another change.
He had been willing to pay Watford up to £15 million in compensation for Marco Silva before turning to Allardyce and the Portuguese manager is now out of work having been sacked by the Vicarage Road club, who claim his focus was deflected by Everton’s interest. Silva remains an option but Moshiri will consider alternative candidates when weighing up his decision.
Everton gave Allardyce an 18-month deal when asking him to stave off the threat of relegation, but that sort of crisis management is at odds with the need for a clear vision.
Walsh is under pressure for the failed impact of numerous signings. Marcel Brands, PSV Eindhoven’s sporting director, is under consideration to replace him.
