An article from tomorrow's Scottish Sun

STEVEN NAISMITH is set to clinch a dream move to Everton this week.

Scotland ace Naisy was put through a rigorous Goodison medical on Saturday.

And if terms can be thrashed out he could be unveiled as an Everton player before the weekend.

Naismith had his pick of clubs after becoming one of the first Gers stars to trigger UK employment law and quit Ibrox for free.

SunSport understands Toffees boss Davie Moyes is now on the verge of winning the race to sign the 25-year-old hitman.

That’s despite stiff competition from newly-promoted West Ham, as we exclusively revealed on June 5.

Stoke, Blackburn and West Brom were among six other sides who wanted the ex-Kilmarnock kid — while clubs in Holland and Turkey were also keen.

But it now looks like Naismith is just days away from linking up again with former Gers team-mate Nikica Jelavic, who has become a big hero at Goodison, netting 11 goals since his January switch.

Former Gers skipper Davie Weir is also back at Everton helping coach the reserves and academy players, and will have been a trusted voice when Moyes was doing research on Naisy.

But Moyes has long been a fan himself.

His interest grew when Naismith had a £2million sell-on clause written into his contract while he took a 75 per cent pay cut in March in a bid to save Gers from liquidation.

Moyes then made his move when Naismith chose not to transfer over to Charles Green’s newco Gers.

Naismith missed the second half of last season with a snapped cruciate, but is now close to fitness after undergoing a gruelling rehab.

A switch to the Toffees would see him in line to make a stunning debut against Manchester United at Goodison on the opening day of the Premier League season.

Before then he will have a packed pre-season. Everton’s players are due back later this month ahead of five days training in Austria.

Naismith would then return to Scotland for friendlies with Dundee United and Motherwell before heading off to Indonesian capital Jakarta for a glamour clash with Galatasaray.

Home games against Greek outfit AEK Athens and Spanish big-spenders Malaga will complete their preparations for the August 15 visit from United.

An emotional Naismith has revealed he wrote to all the management and staff at Ibrox after he decided to quit Gers, thanking them for their support over his last five years at the club.
