Oil and the byproducts we get from it are fantastic but it's not infinitite. We need to prepare for a world without it.
The most imediate danger to the world is climate change and we will more than likely ignore this for short term gain and end up costing us all more money in the longrun when we reach crisis point.

You know, @Tipp blue made a great point in another thread. Did you know these scientists get paid money for their research? Yeah, that's right. They get paid. These super-rich scientists would have us believe that dumping 35 billion metric tons of carbon into the atmosphere is bad for you.
