Stones would need to be a great defender...he has just cost his new club 50m.
He is no longer in the category that he was at Everton , a 2m bargain from Barnsley.

Is he worth 50m...definitely not. There was probably a 15m premium at least because he is young and English. But, that is not the players fault.
Last season he was very poor, but , young players tend to be inconsistent and it's not as if everybody else was playing well.
I think there are too many silly mistakes in his game and if he can get rid of those then he can be a very good player, but I have a feeling he will be a player whose career will be pockmarked with mistakes at crucial times.

I was very disappointed to see his recent criticism of RM, I thought it lacked class.
RM for all his faults gave John Stones his big break and continued to play him even when he was very poor.

I thought the mistake that RM made last season was not leaving him out earlier and longer.

Ultimately though as much as I like him as a player and he is class is only gonna get better, he didn't want to be here. We got a great fee for him and right now we need Williams and Bolasie more than we needed Stones.

I just think it's a bit rum that people keep going on like Stones isn't all that

He's utterly brilliant

We'll kick on without him, like we always do when great players leave, but to act like he isn't that good as some are doing (Not saying you are but others definately are) seems like little more than sour grapes and is a bit sad in all honesty

It's bizarre how often I see people stating with complete conviction that a young player will get incrementally better until he's 30.

There are many, many examples of early developers that have their best years before they're 25.

I think some of you genuinely believe that Lukaku, Stones and Barkley are going to be the equivalent of van Basten, Zidane and Baresi in five years, despite barely winning a game for two seasons while surrounded by the best team since '85.

I think both Barkley and Lukaku are decent at what they do.. Lukaku scores goals but is a pretty ropey footballer, Barkley is a great footballer but lousy at making the right choices.. Stones is just quality though, he defends well, his control and calmness on the ball is epic for a CB and his passing is top notch too.. Needs a bit of work on his heading but he's a top quality player.

hmmm

A choice between a player (no mater how talented) who does not want to play for the greatest club in the land, or two players who are premier league and international players that do.

let me think on that.......:coffee:

I was pretty obstinate in my belief that Stones would be the one to make it to the top, purely because it's only him I could picture playing in a big Champions League knockout tie and not looking out of place.

After last season, though, I'm not sure how long he'll last at City. The media scrutiny is going to be very intense.

Stones has reached his ceiling, a good squad player in a good team. I do not believe he has the character to be a great player and this recent article confirms it.

CBA starting a thread about it.

But in context, the club currently 14th in Div 2, or The Championship in new money, are the 8th biggest spenders in English football this summer.

ALWNV.

Amazing really.
