BRITS= big music event, most winners are white with a few darkies thrown in. MOBOs= Big music event, most winners are black with a few pale faces thrown in.

Spot the difference?

Yeah the mobo's in their name indicate that they are for music of black origin.

The brits don't discriminate in their name, they just face accusations of racism cos miss dynami-tee-hee doesn't clean up every year*.

you condone the behaviour of the mobo's but condemn the brits.

I agree with Heat. Affirmative descrimination is unfortunately neccessary to start to redress the balance. It's all very well saying that descrimination against gays (etc) is illegal. But there's no denying that homophobic attitudes are still rife in society and more so in a sport like football which is perceived as a 'macho' sport. We all defend contact in football and the expression 'it's a man's game' is continually used (or paraphrased). The implication is obviously that homosexuals are somehow less than men there.
I can't see how anyone can rationally argue that descrimination against minorities has ceased to exist. It continues despite the laws prohibiting it

Well that makes it all ok then.

i just can not agree with affirmative descrimination at all - does it not allow descrimination to exist in a form decided to be correct by it's instigators?

Well, exactly. If it's OK for one, then it's OK for all if you follow that logic. If gays are allowed to exclude on the grounds of sexuality, then what leg can they stand on when they are in turn discrimated against?

I was always brought up to believe two wrongs don't make a right!

i agree; 'lets fight discrimination by wielding the weapon of.....discrimination'. i am sure laws against discrimination do not cure the problem 100% but this idea seems very wrong, and flawed.

In an ideal world of course it would never be needed, unfortunately in a society filled with bigotry and prejudice, where people are - still to this day - excluded purely on the basis of their ethnicity or lifestyle choice, positive discrimination will have a place.

Anyway, this is bordering on breaking forum rules, I think I can hear Bill's big texan boots coming down the corridor with his padlock at the ready.

So, if it changed its name to "Urban Music Award" it would ease your white consciousness would it?

In the UK we live in a largely white society, despite what the Daily Mail may claim. You don't say "white pop", or "white rock" You simply say "pop" and "rock" because the underlying assumption is that it is played, performed and listened to largely by white people. The whole term "BRITS" emphases the underlying assumption that this is a "white" event.

We could go into a larger discussion about who is a Brit, whether multiculturalism has failed etc, but i'd just say, are you really saying that there should be no awards for designated people in society such as Asian Music Awards, Miss Black UK Pegeant etc? especially if they hurt nobody? If so, why not?

Reidy, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Walk in my shoes.

PS I see people in their infinite colour, culture and contribution, I'm not colourblind, expecting everyone to behave exactly the same as your typical "Brit", however defined.

"white conciousness"
That in itself is more racist than anything I can ever remember posting

Very presumptuous of you to assume that I have never faced prejudice due to my origins, admittedly there haven't been any firebombings along the line, but I've met plenty of folk abroad that have wanted to rip me to bits just because I'm English, I've worked next to folk that have done as much as possible to Fukc my life up because as far as they were concerned I shouldn't have been in 'their country doing their work,' I've even had grief at games just because I don't have the right accent.

It is your assumption that The Brits means that, reading into something that doesn't actually exist but you say does, whereas Mobo is out there as being exactly what it says on the tin.

Again you generalise that we are all KKK members and to be frank it is insulting and in doing so you are coming across as racist yourself.

Lots of us tell you that we don't think or act the way that you say, yet you seem to want to spend your life trying to trip us up and expose us as racists.

People are actually scared of having a bit of banter sometimes because it is very easy for the race card to be lobbed back at them.

There is a box at Goodison that an 'Asian' (I say asian, maybe they are totally British but by appearance they are of Asian origin so it is easier to say that), they were asked to sit during the game whilst in the outside bit by the head steward who is in charge of health and safety in the stadium, they refused and had a big tizz saying it is their box, pay x amount etc etc, steward said that it made no difference as it is a H&S issue, Steward then reported by occupants to club for making racist remarks to them, now all the people that sit in front of the boxes that witnessed it have had to make statements to say that the allegations are unfounded.

Explain why this is so, I'll get the popcorn?

1. I've never assumed that you've not faced prejuduce. I've never mentioned it, so I can't see how you can extrapulate that suggestion.

2. MOBO is music of black origin, not Music Award for Black Musicians only. There is a difference.

3. I never mentioned KKK, I talked directly to you. I've made no assumptions about anyone else on this forum. I've asked you to walk in my shoes, not every single white person on this forum. Again, putting words into my mouth is a bit unfair.

4. I have no problem with banter, if that's what it is. I can see the "funny side" of some racial incidents. I've told people about an incident with me which I can see it now as funny.

5. My most prolific post that others have responded to has been about Seamus Coleman, now over 60 pages long. Nothing to do with race, but about an Everton player who has grown in my estimation. I have more of a life than wasting it trying to "trap, or trip up" people.

6. Finally, the Asian guy was wrong, plain and simple. In the same way that Diouf was wrong to claim that Everton fans threw bananas at him on a foreign radio station, while the FA took no action against this made up claim of racism against Everton.

Banter by all means but when people start saying (and I'm now speaking in general terms) "them" "those people", "other" which indicates all minorities are somehow strangers, evil, not one of us etc, you'll find me challenging them. And I make no apology for doing so.

I just ask you to remember that I've posted more on Everton related themes (as you'd expect from any fan of the club) than on issues of race or nationality.

Why? Apart from some light-hearted jokes at the start of the thread, nobody has said a word. If anything, it's just a discussion on the benefits and downsides of affirmative discrimination now.

Which is actually boring, if anything!
