Strikers

Why are our strikers so goal shy?

In the past we really have gone whole chunks of a season without carving out clear cut scoring opportunities, at least this season we have been able to. At least one sitter per game.

The biggest reason for the profligacy is the pressure. We give up so much possession that the strikers don't get 4/5 chances game on game and it all becomes about one moment in a match and they snatch at it when chance comes. It's also the situation we find ourselves in, without the points deduction it wouldn't make it a live or die scenario where they then could be a bit more free in their play and not so uptight. Thirdly tiredness also contributes, we ask the players to flog themselves throughout the match and physically they don't have the energy to be clear in mind and body to finish effectively. There was a reason Lineker was so good in that aspect because he saved everything to be fresh for that goalscoring moment.

We have fullbacks who can't cross.

Wingers who can't cross.

Midfielders who can't pass forward.

Zero creativity.

We also sign duds, but even your Rondon/Maupay/King types scored for other clubs but just flop here. There's a reason for that
100%. I can gaurentee that Beto and DCL would be be scoring more at another club. We are creating so few chances at the moment that when the one golden opportunity comes along our stikers are so short of confidence and so rusty that they are gaurenteed to miss. They also have massive amounts of pressure on them and get blamed for missing a golden opportunity when its actually an issue with having a mainly gash team that cant pass or cross.

Play deep and lump it long to an isolated striker.

Can’t cross.

No creativity.

We give our striker about one good chance a game. He misses it and pressure builds and he is now on a bad run of form. fans on his back, the pressure he puts on himself and lack of confidence.

They need to double or triple the time spent on finishing in training. Whatever they are doing at the minute just isn't cutting it. Failing that start dishing out fines for clear cut chances missed. They'll soon sort themselves out then.
I like this idea. Would quickly solve our FFP issues (or whatever its called this week).

I read we’ve had 45 shots from inside the box in our last 6 games so the isolated striker thing seems more like a perception thing than an actual fact I’m not saying they’re all good quality chances of course but it’s clear that we are getting opportunities in the area quite regularly so no need to be snatching at things as if it’s the only sight of goal you’ll get. I think we’re a poor team who don’t create great chances and the strikers we have are below average at finishing what they do get it’s just that simple one of them cost about 2 mil and one of them could be bought with no down payment it’s not as if they’re world class strikers suddenly drawing a blank.

How many of those shots has DCL had though? Or how many have been corners that have pinged around the box?

I get what you are saying, but in terms of big chances how many are our strikers getting? It’s really not many at all.

And without doucoure, we don’t have anyone who is there to pick up the scraps and actually be in the space DCL creates.

You are right though. Expectation on a 1.5m striker and one who we haven’t paid any money for yet are too high.
