It's where the phrase "spend a penny' comes from, as a euphemism fir having a pee. From the days where a pee could be had for 1p. Of course today, 20p seems the going rate fir a council bog ... an encouragement not to be spoil the town. Even seen £1 creeping in here and there ... and it will persist if people pay it.

In a Swiss service stop some years back I was confronted with a €1 slot fir a pee. "Bugger that" I thought and found a spot under a bridge, where there were another 10-15 men at various stages of bladder emptying. I felt a surge and a tear of pride.
I hope that was a tear and not a wayward piss freckle caused by some over-zealous drip removal.

Interesting one this, I'm not aware there is a charge although I'm not across every aspect of the UK's public urination legislative framework. You would run a significant of eventually getting your head kicked in. Or arrested.

Happy to see the debate opened up though.

Virtually every tourist place in the Lakes has this.

It can make things really difficult if you`ve got young kids, especially young lads.

It was more the letterbox option I was thinking about - potentially cheaper but not without consequence!
There's jeopardy though, for those who get a thrill from that. The powerful spring shutter, and of course, dog potential.

Speaking for myself, I'm not a fan.

Believe all the pay channels (at least here in the States) started without advertisements. That was a big part of their early appeal but you’re right that has completely eroded over the years.

Extortionate prices for water is one that really gets me (e.g. sporting events)
The missus has prime, Netflix and Disney. We refuse to watch the films with ads option on prime and we plan to ditch the others as soon as ads appear. I'll go back to using my huge dvs collection.

Thanks for reminding me of the time I was in a pub in shorts and went to the urinals. I felt every speck of splashback from rhe fella next to me's pressure washer of a stream. Think twice about urine before wearing shorts in public kids.

Probably better to go through the system than have your urine go straight into the groundwater?

I agree facilities should be free of charge and readily available.

Absolutely should be covered by the local rates. Having toilet facilities is not a luxury (or shouldn't be in the UK) its a basic human right. Same with water fountains. They should be dotted around the areas.

Every animal's urine on the planet goes into the ground water. It's sterile when it comes out, but bacteria soon like to feed on the nutrients (was only a few hundred years ago that you'd be paid to pee by those who wanted it fir tanning leather or collecting saltpetre - oh how times change). Pee is very quickly broken down becoming harmless. In fact, there's little difference between what nature does and what a water treatment plant does.

I've always been told at festivals it has a negitive effect on groudwater and the water table and potentially rivers, perhaps that is because of such a concentrated volume?
