Summer 2018 Transfer Window

To who though?

No other club on earth will pay him that.

Maybe a loan somewhere, but even then we'd have to pay some of the wage.
Lol. I read somewhere during the Tosun transfer, that Babe was on like 45k a week. I got no clue about the Turkish comp, but he is a Netherlands international. Would imagine that sending Klaassen there would mean paying half, if not more than half of his wage.

Won't be leaving. More likely that he starts in CM. If it doesn't work out, then loaning in January.

Jags as fourth choice CB is just fine.

We need an experienced head - he was our best defender last season - and having him as insurance behind Holgate, Keane and hopefully a new, quality CB, will be good heading into the season.
I would accept that.

Please put Keane and Williams out of their misery though. Two first choice CBs in, Holgate and Jagielka the backup. I understand fully though that Keane will stay and two quality new CBs is but a pipe dream.

Just because he brought in and used a lot of younger players in the Eredivisie doesn't mean that is purely what he is going to do here.

It's a completely different scenario as Dutch sides have to rely on youth as their better older players tend to move on to bigger and better leagues.

If hes got a 30 year old and a 29 year old who can both be replaced by better younger and cheaper players...he'd be daft to keep them.

I still cant understand the point of signing Walcott.

As i said at the time, good for the season past, good next season...then hes done.

Good morning mein frandels and welcome to the introduction of the Weasel Index for the summer of 2018.

View attachment 46945

A small tribute to @Sapie88 - without him, we are short a few Weasel pictures.

If you are new to GrandOldTeam.com , welcome, make yourself at home, and why not learn about the origins of the Index here : https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/summer-transfer-window-2017.94428/page-2560#post-5622816

Over the last few days, the rumbles under the turf have become louder. Was it Marcel Brands and his smart-casual jackets that stirred them? Was it the bloodletting on the Finch Farm lawn led by hatchet-lady-in-chief Denise filtering down into the warrens (is this right, do Weasels live in warrens?) ?

We do not know.

But last night, this happened.

It even has MASSIVE BREAKING NEWS in huge capitals. The Weasels are back.

We are therefore compelled to begin our - and I say our, because it is a Weasel Hunter Collective, in this Fourth Era of Frandliness - Weasel Index for the Summer.

I for one am expecting lots of OUTs, and perhaps not a lot of INs.

Please remember the standard Weasel Marking technique:

  • Spot a majestic / disgusting example of utter Transfer Weaseling
  • Write '@orly' as a reply
  • Await the Index marking and then public listing the following week
There is nothing worse than missing a weasel in the wild. The Weasel Hunter Collective is remarkably efficient, but if even one gets away, they may breed uncontrollably, leading to infestation. Therefore may I also suggest that you tag in fellow Index enthusiast @CairnsToffee too when tagging your weasel spot?

Mr @CairnsToffee was always the ideal candidate for Assistant Index Curator.

Dangers in the Weasel Habitat:

The Ferrets

Ferrets are not to be confused with Weasels. These individuals will deliberately seek to be Indexed with utterly manufactured rumours designed solely to dilute the scientific credibility of the Index. When in doubt, tag them, but with caution. Curator discretion will then be exercised.

The Elk

The Elk is a hideous roaming creature that lurks on the edges of the GrandOldTeam.com habitat, obsessed with numbers and living in 'pods' with other invertebrates. It has (unsuccessfully) tried to have the funding for the Index taken away and keeps trying to reintroduce the 'Lickspittle Weasel' Genus Lickspittlus Myersa variant back into the breeding pool . If seen, crush immediately.

External factors

There are certainly examples of the Weasel on other social media platforms. However the Index will not be recording these, and we ask that individuals are not pursued for their rumours. We know there are serial offenders, but until they emerge from a hole in the GrandOldTeam.com lawn, they do not count.

@themole10 award for Excellent Transfer ITKness

960x0.jpg

The above is a mole. It also lives in a hole.

The Mole List is for examples of excellent Transfer Weaseling, for those who deliver, like @Joey66 , or @marnie , or @Pabbers . They tell you WHO, or WHEN, and sometimes even HOW AND WHY a transfer will happen, and then it happens.

We are blind, and because of these moles, we can see the truth - the Transfer Truth.

These moles will be listed weekly too.

The Kristian Walsh Award for Transfer Writings

A new award has been prepared for this summer window.

Direct lifting of a rumour from elsewhere, with the crime evidenced, will invoke a Kristian Walsh award.

Happy Hunting mein frandelinos.

Awesome stuff, its great having something fun on here to focus on during all the breakdowns, I hope you keep this going for decades and decades!

As i said at the time, good for the season past, good next season...then hes done.

Thinking it will happen and it actually happening are two different things though.

He may be decent for another 3-4 seasons, who knows?

We worry about things like this far too much. We are not in a position where we always have to worry about resale value any more so we can take a player or two on for the present.

I compare the Davy Klaassen saga to the Jordy Clasie one.

Came from similar backgrounds. Southampton ended up having to pay 30k of his 40k to send him on loan to Belgium. And that is tiny Southampton with a little 40k wage. Klaassen is on nearly triple.

Walsh really signed Sandro on 100k wages lol. What was he doing? That is shocking.

On paper we were effectively signing a player that was valued at £15m-20m for around £5m. He was being linked with all the top Spanish sides, was the Spanish u-21 number 9 and had just scored around 18 goals for a struggling Malaga side.
On paper he was a great signing and we had to pay enormous wages to get him.

It’s a shame we don’t play on paper!

If we did play on paper then Klaassen (Ajax capatain and tons of goals / assists and previous seasons) and Keane (England centre back with league leading stats in clearances and blocks) would’ve all been great signings too.

Oh its not me thinking anything about this from a personal perspective...

I think that Brands wont hold onto players with resale value based on his background and quotes so far

Wish the Arnautovic for £50m shouts would go away it's making me nervous. If we even thinking of doing that and i don't believe we are, we may have kept vacation Steve in the job. We've already said we are going to be more prudent and youthful, a 29yr old for that price is neither of those things and he's decidedly average to boot.

Their backgrounds aren't similar at all career wise, classie was a toured prospect who by the time he came England was regarded as a busted prospect, think he'd even lost his place at Ajax for a couple of seasons as a starter, Klassen captained them to several league titles and a European final as a lynchpin of the side.

One went to Belgium as the only interest, the other had Napoli wanting him last January.

Red flags in what sense?

I think it depends what the expectations are?

My expectations were always four signings, and anything on top is a bonus. Those signings need to be quality (CB, LB, CM, FW (counting wingers as forwards, btw)/

Ideally, those four quality players will replace the entire contribution of 9-10 players who offer very little.

Get all that done and the foundations are in place moving forward.

Red flag is available cashflow in the business, i think we will move the deck chairs around and balance the squad, but there are very clear limits. It might necessarily be a bad thing, more a step back a couple of years pre Mosh, there will be a number of exceptional costs this year to. Raising money through sales isn't ideal in terms of our own planning in my opinion. We do have two nuclear buttons though - as i see it.
