Summer of 2017

Agree about that summer being the worst, I often think about it and the players we could've signed instead when I'm driving to and from work.
I believe Walsh had a deal lined up to bring in Maguire and Robertson from Hull for £20m combined but Koeman declined.

In hindsight there were a good couple of decent players from the relegated teams we could've picked up for next to nothing in the grand scheme of things. De Roon and Traore from Boro, Maguire & Robertson from Hull, Pickford obviously from Sunderland. Probably cost £60-70m with bags of sell on, compared to spending near £60m on Keggers and Dave with no resale or impact! Could've even signed Chris Wood and we'd have bought 7 players for the price of 1 Lukaku

1989 was the end. Bill Kenwright joined the board and Trevor Steven left.

2016 - not 2017 - was when the attempted reboot died. Hiring Koeman was a lazy move to sprinkle stardust on the club. Sadly, Koeman’s star was earned as a player, not a manager. We repeated the trick with Lampard in the next decade…

In my opinion most of our current problems go back to 2017 and all the money we wasted. We sold a top class striker in Lukaku, yet somebody, I don't know who decided it was a good idea to buy Sigurdsson and Klassen. Add to that we had signed Rooney on an expensive contract. We then bought Vlasic and Sandro, when we had only just bought Lookman in January. So we ended up with a team with zero pace and we lost player who scored most of our goals. We went from going into summer, expecting to challenge for Europe, to bringing in Allardyce to save us from relegation. Our 4th choice right back in Martina at left back. So does anyone on here actually know who made these signings. Was it Koemann, Walsh, Moshiri or Kenwright?
The malaise started in the late 80’s with a board content to do the bare minimum.
2015-18 is where things really unravelled in recent times - from Martinez losing the plot defensively, to Koeman’s second summer where he, Walsh and Kenwright had completely different transfer agendas. From there on it was bad move after bad move.

Sigurdsson was a Moshiri vanity project clearly. Everyone was screaming that 30 million is already too much and he went on and paid 45. Koeman was another vanity project, Moshiri wanted a big name. Koeman did do a decent job at Southampton, but he was primarly signed for his reputation as a player. He didn't want to come so Moshiri had to pay him a massive wage. And he clearly showed he wasn't motivated.

Another pivotal point came after Silva's first summer. Club sold Gueye to PSG and couldn't keep Zouma so Silva lost core of his team. Neither player was replaced nor was he given the experienced forward he wanted so of course the team struggled.

I think they tried to push the boat in '88 but unfortunately that big splash was not good. They signed Cottee for a new record (2.2m) as well as McCall, Nevin and McDonald for sizeable sums. But they were not as good as the players they replaced. Harvey was a great coach but not a good manager but he was the obvious choice to follow Kendall.

That summer we lost Mountfield, Power, Harper, Stevens, Heath and Reid.

Next summer also saw quite a few big signings, unfortunately most were not up to the task: Keown, Newell, Rehn, Whiteside (by far the best signing), Atteveld and Beagrie. But we also lost Steven, van den Hauwe, Bracewell and Clarke.

Disagree about Koeman.

He was signed because he’d just had 6th and 7th placed finishes with Southampton and was a highly sought after manager as a result of that.

There was even talk of Arsenal getting him.

Let’s not rewrite history.

Koeman sunk this club.

Full stop.

A fat headed Dutch fraud.
Edam headed Dutch fraud, if you don’t mind.
