Summer transfer speculative hopes and dreams

He needs to play which is one of the reasons he left Bayern and the RS and Spurs have too much competition. I think we have a decent chance.
yup and he'll be told he can have a pretty free role as number 10 right in the thick of it and running things. Other places he's be stuck out on a wing or just servicing 'bigger names'

McCarthy is a holding midfielder and Ross is more naturally suited to being a box to box midfielder although there is an argument for playing Barkley and Besic together.

We played that formation against QPR and England played Barkley in midfield in the world cup. Most of us think that's his best position and one of the reasons for getting a new No10 is so as we can move Barkley back.

Barkley isn't a holding midfielder. As for most of us thinking that. Most seems a bit ott.

So Cleverley, Garbutt and Del in....cracking start to the window that.

Let's hope this keeps going and he also manages to offload some of the deadwood, and in that I am certainly not including Osman or Peinaar as they are both very intelligent footballers and worthy of a squad place.

I'm thinking more of the Kone, McGeady / Wigan calibre of player.

Besic and McCarthy are holding midfielders.

We don't need to always play with two holding midfielders. Most good teams don't. It's a very defensive formation and makes it very difficult when teams sit back and counter us. Barkley should be playing like our Steven Gerrard.

Not Howard
Coleman - Jagielka - Stones - Baines
Barkley - McCarthy
Mirallas - Mertens - Deulofeu
Lukaku

That'd be nice.

Its a start, still need to add 2 or 3 more, and of a high caliber too

But most teams don't have wing backs like ours. How many teams have a wing back setting up another? It leaves huge gaps. Counters can destroy us.

It was a very effective system the year before last. We just lacked the oomph to make it work for us last year imo.

But Shaqiri is a winger. Mertens often plays at number 10 for Napoli.

Shaqiri starting playing No. 10 (very well I might add) for Switzerland in the WC. The majority of his starts came there last season too apparently. Wouldn't be at all surprised if that's where Martinez sees him - the versatility of playing on the wing is a plus of course.
