If we kept Rom and had Rooney coming in then I personally would be delighted with our striking options - throwing Lookman, DCL and Kev into the mix also.
Has an air of the Gascoingne signing for me , an ageing and badly declining former player, performing small cameo pieces, as his career draws to desultory and dispiriting close. Hope he goes somewhere else for his swan song personally.

Exactly the point I've been trying to make when there were a few on here last night saying it's all about winning more games and therefore attacking players are more of a priority!

You don't win anything without a good spine & that starts with GK, CB
I can understand why people are drawn to attacking players as we don't have an abundance of options and everyone knows we rely on Rom.

Then there's the shortage of wingers and creative options, so people see it as a priority and to be fair it's not something that we ignore either.

But a strong spine is a great basis and itself can be a catalyst for better results; just see how much effect a resolute defence and Morgan have had.

If we focus on that strong spine then results will themselves improve and then we can focus on the fine tweaks to get the best performances.

I usually agree with a lot that you write, but the thought of Rooney returning wreaks of sentiment rather than actual progression. It's regressive.

Fair enough.

I just look at our current striking options (bar Rom) and fail to see how Rooney wouldn't improve us.

I won't be devastated if he doesn't come, and I won't be overjoyed if he does. I'm basically not arsed either way but if he did come in I think he'd improve us.

i don't agree with people saying that van dijk will be a big statement signing, he's not widely known around europe, a player like rooney would be more of a statement signing. Van dijk plays for soton, the fee would probably raise eyebrows around europe, but it's sort of along the lines of a couple that the RS have brought from saints imo, a bit above that level because well, other clubs actually seem to be interested, CL clubs at that, but i really don't see it as a statement signing imo.
Sadly Rooney is only a name now. His next move should be to the MLS or China where signing Roonet would be a statement signing for a player who is past his best and on the twilight of his career. VVD is one of the best centre halves in the league and his purchase would undoubtedly be a statement signing as so many clubs will be in for his services.

I wouldn't be going anywhere near Van Dijk for the money quoted (£55m), no defender is worth that to a team.
We are close to a top 6 with a merry go round of Jags/Williams/Mori. I think with the midfielders we have and maybe will have next season we could get away with not spending such amounts.

Pickford, Keane, Gylfi, Rooney are the ones im expecting to be looked at.

Maybe need one more CB if jags goes, cover for LB/RB/CF also needed, but not at the expense of those above.

The Lukaku/Barkley situations are already ready well known and established...... just not by the fans or it appears the supposed itks.

Koeman and Walsh know exactly which players they need to sign and how many, the budget will have been decided a long time ago.
I would say that deals in and out are already agreed and I think Rooney is one of those.
I think Lukaku is staying for one more year , contract or no contract.
I think Barkley may well be sold as RK has never given any inkling that a deal could be anywhere near.
First sane post on here for a while.... including my own!

The scenes in the @Mikey_Fitzgerald house when big Jim White announces Virgil.

And then corrects himself and says it's a double transfer, Tierney as well..
