Summer Transfer Window 2017

...if we can pull off the transfer of Joshua Zirkzee from Feyenoord it could be a significant signing. I appreciate he's only 16 but he looks a fine big athlete now, I can only imagine his size and capability in a couple of years time. He could genuinely be ready for open age football towards the end of next season, especially given he scored 33 goals in 27 games at youth level last season.

Looks like we have. He's on the teamsheet for a u19's game today.

Few thoughts:

  • Can we go back in Koulibaly? Mori's injury means we can't go into a 60-game season with Keane, Jags and Williams (and maybe Holgate). Jags and Williams together terrify me. Why not bid £50m for that man monster. Perfect partner for Keane, plays left CB as well.
  • Barry is more than adequate as a back up to Schneiderlin for this season. I hope he stays and gets the record.
  • Barkley - Rooney can mentor him. Anyone who thinks he isn't good enough watch the youtube montage of his first season. Martinez was awful for Barkley. We need that energetic, fearless Evertonian back.
  • Connolly/Kenny - I would be worried going into games with both of these starting.
  • Giroud - for £20m sign him up!
  • Sigurdsson - good player, but if Barkley is he really needed - who would start on the left?
Squad in order of selection:
GK: Pickford, Stek
RB: Coleman, Kenny, Cuco
LB: Baines, Connolly, Cuco
CB: Koulibaly, Keane, Williams, Jagielka, Holgate, Funes Mori
DCM: Schneiderlin, Barry, Besic
CM: Gueye, Klassan, Davies, McCarthy, Walsh
AM: Rooney, Barkley
RW: Bolasie, Lennon, Dowell
LW: Sigurdsson, Mirallas, Lookman
CF: Sandro, Giroud, Calvert-Lewin

Caveat is that those 3 in bold will cost £100m+, but Jesus......

Squawka quoting Pep as saying that Kelechi Iheanacho will definitely leave Man City this summer, but saying he'll probably go to Leicester. I wonder if we tried to sign him?

I'd like him better than Giroud, or any of the others being mentioned as an incoming striker.

We haven't singed anyone in a few days and suddenly people are settling on Gareth Barry. We should be looking at better if we are to challenge. He's a liability in most games, as he's too slow and is 5 yards too late to most things. He either just bundles in to people or is a passenger doing slow shuttles side to side as the game goes on around him. The difference when Schneiderlin came in was massive.

If we're dominating possession in an easier game then he can look half decent as he likes a pass, but we have younger players who can get game time and play that role in easier games. He's just taking up someone else's position.

I also don't get this, he'll be great as a coach, he doesn't have any coaching qualifications, meaning he's years behind in that sense. It's not like he's a Duncan Ferguson and would be brought in as some sort of 'charismatic figurehead' while he gets qualified either.

As a club Everton should be looking to the future and demanding more than what Barry is currently able to offer.
Nah.
He's top quality on the ball and against a side that is going to sit in and defend for their lives, he's quite creative and is a far better option than Gana or Davies.
Would you play away at Spurs? Of course not. But you wouldn't play Gana at home to Burnley.
Being a club challenging relies on having multiple options. Gaz Baz is a good one.

What is a players player? Cos if I was any of the other players I'd be disappointed having to do his running, and being left isolated when he hasn't closed down the space when I've pressed. His output is hardly that of luxury attacking midfielder either.

You can admire a man's work ethic and career, but it doesn't mean you need to give him a job.

A players player = Someone who commits fouls around the edge of the box because he's unable to win the ball. Given the title of 'A players player' as he is taking one for the team (ignoring that he's not good enough).

So Ross out for 4 weeks....potentially means he isn't leaving us.

Mori is out for 9 month, need a 4th defender again

No striker in sight
We may just bring in a loan signing to cover centreback if the manager feels we need to do so.
We already have Williams, Jagielka, Keane, Holgate to play there, by all accounts Martina can cover there and Besic as well. I am not sure we will see any additions of note. I think it more likely means that Jagielka has now no chance of leaving in this window.

I wish we would get a striker in, it's been the position lacking for 2/3 seasons and now even more importantly so. They should have been in earlier than the others so the players can gel and get used to movement etc.
DCL is the only out and out CF we have and I don't think he's ready to be the main man yet.
