Summer Transfer Window 2017

I'm gonna put myself out there a little bit and say that my biggest issue with the arguments on this forum is that everyone seems to think they are qualified to scout football players. As if sitting on the couch and watching footy means you know more than professional football scouts and managers (where even the best in the world maybe only get 50% of their transfers right to begin with). And everything is so black and white. Players are either crap or world class. Or because they performed a certain way for one team, they are only capable of performing at a similar level for another team, totally ignoring all the factors that can determine how well a player fits in with a club.

I wish we could all be a little more honest and admit that none of us really know what decisions the club should be making. I certainly don't have a clue. My only ongoing hope is that whatever the club ends up doing, it brings us more success and better football. Honestly lads, you'll save yourself a lot of stress if you're willing to look at it this way.

By the way, I realize the above statement kind of goes against the whole purpose of a fan forum in the first place - I don't really expect people to stop posting their opinions and having healthy debates. Just had to get it off my chest. COYB. ;)
You present a reasoned and rational post. Of course, such has little currency in football forum discussions.
For most people on here, football IS life ; it is all consuming, very little exists outside it. Life revolves around how one's footie team goes on a weekend.
As a consequence, people are VERY informed on all matters football. Most of them know more about possible transfer targets (in UK and/or internationally) than a club's professional scouts.
For example, last season, everyone on here were calling out for us to sign Geuye from Villa.

There is SO much knowledge on display in football forums...

Time marches on. I think he'll get Sigurdsson in and leave it at that.

I foresee some BS formations not in our tradition this season....and much wailing and gnashing of teeth when it fails completely.

Ah, The Polemic returns, refreshed...

How was it in the sin bin Dave? Did you go wailing and gnashing on NSNO or TEF perhaps?

Nah, he doesn't actually believe any of it. He just says the opposite of what is conventionally known to be true to wind people up.
I'm going to diagnose Davek with oppositional defiant disorder. Symptoms are as follows

  • Throwing repeated temper tantrums
  • Excessively arguing with adults*, especially those with authority
  • Actively refusing to comply with requests and rules
  • Deliberately trying to annoy or upset others, or being easily annoyed by others*
  • Blaming others for your mistakes*
  • Having frequent outbursts of anger and resentment*
  • Being spiteful and seeking revenge*
  • Swearing or using obscene language
  • Saying mean and hateful things when upset*
*-being the most common signs.

I was in Australia a wee while ago and people there refer to each other (if in groups of 2 or more) as "yous jokers" (pronounced as ewes jokers).
It was very odd/funny; my sons and I might be doing something and an Aussie would call out "hey yous jokers" On most occasion we were not even joking about( in fact we were quite serious) and they still call you "jokers"
They speak differently in Australia lol
PS NZ has similarly odd expressions. Stuff I never learned at school!!

I live in Aus and have never heard "you's jokers" you'd mad c bomb" is the mostly commonly used phrase I hear... and mad c bomb is the highest praise that can be received from an Aussie

No mate, that trip was purely holiday with the family. But I'm sometimes in Sydney and Melbourne on business . I like the place and people very much but I am allergic to some of their pollens ( and the heat can be a bit oppressive).
When are you thinking of going?

Aussies are a decent bunch... I too suffer with the pollen down in Melbourne ... darwin tho? No worries .. but you can't swim in the water here

To be fair I think a lot of people's opinions of their scouting ability etc rose dramatically by watching el fraudo's team selections and the majority of his signings.

I'm unfamiliar with that expression, never encountered it om my antipodean excursions...but land of Oz (and Kiwi) are generally sound places. I went to Darwin only once; I was sailing on a yacht...they have some serious tidal movements there. I reckon the high tide /low tide moves about 20 feet...our yacht's naiad which was floating when tied to the jetty at high tide, was hanging in the air when we got back from the pub!!

...we went back to the pub

...apologies for being a little late this morning, 3 full drinking days including a late one yesterday at The Open are my excuse. Anyway, a round up of rumours for this Monday morning;

- According to the Daily Express, Everton are close to reaching a compromise with Swansea for midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. The paper says the Toffee's will pay £40m plus £5m add-ons as well as £90k per week for the 27 year old.

- The Express also reports that Arsenal are leading the race for Everton's Ross Barkley. Like Spurs, though, Arsenal are unwilling to pay Everton's £50m valuation or the players £150k per week wage demands.

- Also in the Express is an Everton link with Leicester City striker, Islam Slimani. The paper suggests Everton might go for Slimani if they fail in their pursuit of Olivier Giroud.

- 4th Official say Everton are looking at Vitesse Arnhem keeper, Eloy Room. The 28 year old Curacao nternational has played 155 games for Vitesse.

- The Croydon Advertiser reports Everton have joined Crystal Palace in pursuit of Senegal international, Badou N'Diaye. The midfielder plays for Osmanlispor and West Ham are also keen on the 27 year old.

- The Daily Mirror says Everton want £7.7m Hull winger, Kamil Grosicki.
