I don't know, but let's not forget that Russell Griffiths is two years younger than even Pickford and is gradually gaining more and more experience

Is it worth spending a wedge on Pickford when Griffiths could still develop into a good keeper and Robles is doing a good job between the sticks at this particular moment?

Pickford could just be having a good season, as could Robles

For me, if we're going to spend money on a keeper it has to be one of the top ones, other than that calibre of keeper I see no reason to spend money in that area while Robles is still doing well and we have a 20 year old keeper already on the books who could still surpass the 22 year old Sunderland have

hes crap though

I'm not really on #TeamPickford to be honest

I don't see him as particularly better than Robles
I'm firmly in the team Robles camp at the moment. I remain to be convinced he is the long term answer but am not dismissing that either. But we have other areas that need improving more than the keeper.

As regards Pickford he is around the same age as Joel when he signed for us and at a much higher standard. He is an amazing shot stopper and in that regard reminds me of De Gea at the same age. That doesnt guarantee he'll develop into the WC keeper that De Gea did though.

All depends mate, probably more than any other position keeper is the hardest to predict the development of a player i reckon.

Like with everything though, i guess the answer ultimately comes down to how much we really have to spend in the summer and what we prioritise, 20m or something for a young keeper is nothing if you have the likes of cities money etc, bviously we dont have anythign like that, so all depends on if going for a keeper would stop us improving somehwere we arguably need it a lot more...

Robles seems to have developed the very nice trait of keeping concentration in a game where he has nothing to do before pulling off a great save etc, thats something you don't see bang avaerage keepers possessing. That keeps up till the end of the season, then i'd be more than happy for us to look at other parts of the team before looking at the keeper (cb, second striker and wide options)

Forster and Schmeichel are both better than Joel, I'd say.

Joel is doing brilliantly at the moment though and the no.1 position is his to lose for the time being.

Robles impresses me more every week

Granted, if Butland or Forster suddenly became available I'd take them like, but I'm currently fine with Robles starting as #1 next season

Pickford could be a great keeper, but I'm not writing off young Griffiths yet. I don't see the point in spending decent money on Pickford at this current moment when we already have a good keeper in Robles, we have a lad who is 2 years younger already on the books who could still improve and we have other areas of the squad that also need strengthening this summer

We can't spend big in every position, and if it's top CB Vs young GK, I'm going to prefer the former as opposed to the latter when it comes to money being spent

I'd say Forster is better than Robles, but I think Robles is at very least on par with Kasper Schmeichel, if not better than him

I certainly wouldn't spend decent money on Schmeichel to replace Robles, as I don't think it'd be worth the money, although I would in the case of Forster. I've rated Forster for quite a while now

Think both Forster and Schmeichel have looked shaky this season at times but that doesn't take away that either of them are top class on their day.

Again though, I will emphasise that Robles is doing well and deserves the spot. But I can see those two named as being realistic targets come summer.

I can't see Forster coming to us to be honest

His next move, if there is one, will be to a CL team either here or abroad

If Leicester go down and have a fire sale I could see Schmeichel possibly being available. If we got him at a discount then I wouldn't be too bothered, as he and Robles could compete for the #1 role. That would probably mean the end of Stekky though

He's 20, he's got plenty of time to improve

Why spend money on a 22 year old keeper when we've got an incumbent keeper doing well in Robles, a capable back up in Stekelenberg and a young 20 year old waiting in the wings with potential?

Give Griffiths time, keepers usually get better as they get older

he'll never play a premier league game for us unless all our other goalies decide to beat the crap out of each other with baseball bats in training.

this sums up forster, from football365 this morning:

* Joe Hart will hardly be quaking in his boots. On this basis, even an injured Jack Butland would be preferential. Only one Southampton player emerged from this cup final defeat with his reputation harmed.

Fraser Forster might be 6′ 7″, but the 28-year-old somehow manages to make the goal look bigger, not smaller. He should have done far better with all three goals. It might feel harsh, but that is what elite, international level goalkeepers do. His performances this season stand as conclusive proof that he does not belong in that category. A reminder that this is Southampton’s best-paid player, and he cost them in a cup final.

I'm sure many fans on Sunderland forums said the same about Pickford before he had his good run

Again, the lads 20 and could end up being a good keeper. He's got as much chance of succeeding as he does of failing at this point. It's far too early to say for sure, but again there's no point spending big money on a 22 year old who could just be a flash in the pan when we have a 20 year old on the books with plenty of room to develop

To write him off at this stage is outright lunacy

no pickford has been highly rated from a young age, griffiths the opposite. i'd actually be surprised if hes still on our books next season.

I'd never even heard of him before this season, so I'm not sure how "highly rated" he was

Had Sunderland not had squad issues he probably wouldn't have even played that much this season. He was thrown in because they had a crisis and he's done well with his chance

Griffiths has been behind more experienced keepers who have both gotten minutes

He's had a mixture of praise and critiques from the clubs he's had loan spells at, which is par for the course for a 20 year old player

Goalkeepers generally get better as they get older

Simply put, it is too early to write him off. You might be right and he never makes it here, but it's by no means the certainty that you are making out. It never fails to befuddle me that so many of our supporters are so quick to want to boot young players out of the door. It's almost as if you want him to fail
