Summer transfer window 2023

I appreciate deals are difficult to do, especially when we're looking for low upfront payments and spreading costs over a longer period of time.. but what I can't get my head around is how outgoing deals that seem so straightforward on the surface (eg. Demarai Gray to Saudi, Holgate to Southampton) are taking months and months to complete.

Gray to Saudi was rumoured back in the middle of June.. Holgate rumour has been hanging about for over a month. These are deals that suit all parties, so why are they taking so long to complete? Are we holding out for the best possible fees? Waiting an extra month to try and scrape a few extra pennies? Do the players not want the move? Or are we just absolutely incompetent?

Pretty confident we are incompetent

Holgates apparently at Southampton today doing a medical - its a loan.

That's why he's here. A top club doesn't employ a manager like Dyche. Bringing him in is an announcement of how you perceive your level and the limits of your ambition. Of course we've had a summer like this; it's what we were set up for

Pep was not coming here last January, nor was Emeri or Klopp. No one wanted Dyche as first choice but I cannot think of ANY other manager that would have come here, was available and would keep us up.

Nowhere near as straightforward as that unfortunately

In the case of Gray, he wanted to stay in England and he was waiting for interest from Fulham or Palace to materialise. It's only late in the window where that hasn't happened that he's agreed to look at the Saudi option.

In Holgate's case, that move has been on the cards all summer but Everton have been unable to agree a % wage split with Southampton. You don't just cave and get him off the books, you hold your position and get the best possible deal for the club. That's why so much happens across the market so late in the window

Yes

We can't think of another manager because we always choose from the same merry go round. So when Dyche is sacked there will be calls for Potter and the like. Our managerial recruitment policy is no different from our player recruitment policy. If there are gems out there then Everton won't find them. You must admit that when you bring in an Allardyce or a Dyche then it sends out a certain message
