Aaron Martin Spanish left back on a free transfer is been mentioned on that twitter !
He's actually a decent player. Was very highly thought of in Spain and been solid for Mainz. I'm surprised he's been allowed to go on a free tbh.

If true that he's available on a free, that would be fantastic business for us. He's not a world beater, but we'd struggle to get an LB of his quality in for less than £10m. If we had him with Myko as back up, that would allow time for Ishe Samuels-Smith to develop. People at the club are very excited about him.

Like I said though, it's sensible so Everton won't do it. Dyche will probably sign Charlie Taylor!

Seems unlikely now, but you could have said the same about golf a couple of years ago.
Not similar enough for me. They bought like 5 current top golfers in their prime plus 10 recognizable past it ones and had a huge piece of the market. Buying Ronaldo, Benzema and Kante barely registers in football. They have to go so much further and spend so more than it doesn't seem plausible to be more than a middle eastern NASL or a high grade version of what MLS does now.

what type of player would you say he is similar to at lb. Couldnt really find anything new on him

Difficult to say in terms of a comparison of playing style to another player. There are probably people on here who would be better to ask. He's certainly more in the Baines and Digne camp than the Mykolenko, as in he is comfortable with the ball at his feet.

He was very highly thought of at Espanyol and at Spanish youth level but didn't seem to live up to the hype. Moved to Germany and didn't seem to work out for a while - Mainz tried to move him on - but he's come on in the last couple of seasons. Scored a few goals this year and has bulked up a bit (he was a bit slight). Still must only be about 26/27.

EDIT: I've had a look and can't find a recent video but can find one of his Espanyol days if you want a look.

Also, I can't remember who he scored against so can't find his goals. Here's a free kick from last season I think.

Yeah would love us to go out and get a quality lb just with money will be hard for us. I feel will be alot of players that most fans like me wont have heard of

Difference is people watch golf for the players. The best competition is created by those players going head to head. Get the players and the viewers follow.

Football is different. You could get the best 22 players in the world and have them playing for Saudi teams or Chinese teams or MLS teams and people would still rather watch whoever is turning out for Everton v Villa. They’d probably rather watch a championship game. The competition, not the players, is king in football.

Well let’s see, in this game cash is king. The only reason the PL has the best players is it offers the highest wages. I remember it used to be Serie A. From a world wide audience perspective, no one cares where players play as long as they play, you watch to see them play.

What we are seeing now is the lure. Establishing credibility. You get players come to the twilight, Messi, Ronaldo, Bemzama. Next phase is you see Zaha getting 45 mill for two years, players heads get turned. Suddenly more get attracted to the east. There aren’t FFP limits there, players can make what they like. Suddenly Saudi get market share and incrementally increases.

Fifa and Uefa go to war - they aren’t far of it at the mo. Prob FIFA brings the Saudi into the fold, particularly if it scuppers Uefa. Far east even has big clubs in Europe for political clout.

Its fine if that not your opinion - but it’s just happened in golf - you can see the smoke in the game - what else do you think Saudi are doing.

Cash is king in football, the players will go, the power brokers will collude - if you stay around long enough you see history repeat.

It may not be take over but Saudi could be looking for a seat at the table and market share, just like with Liv - be brought to the top table to be brought into line.

Yep. Martin has never lived up to his potential, but he is decent and we're on a tight budget. I'd like Truffert but he would probably set us back about £25m and is probably being watched by better clubs. When you consider that Mykolenko cost us about £18m and is pretty rubbish really, it tells you how difficult things can be.

If Martin is available on a free, we really should go for it. He's not as good as Baines or Digne but is a huge upgrade on Mykolenko and there would be no fee involved. Surely we have to look at that 🤷

I don't think any major team sport has had the center of it moved to a non-traditional area the same way it would have to happen here. You say history repeating but it would truly be unprecedented beyond just football.

The only other player was the wolves lad i thought we could get a decent deal but was frozen out of the team for some reason and well tierney but his injuries just dont think could risk it

Primacy in football leagues has changed amongst countries, in the 90s it was Serie A, the dictating factor was money, then the PL, again because of money.

Players will follow the money nothing surer, I dont think Saudi are looking to take over, just go to war for a bit to gain power and become a power broker in the game.

Why do people think they are doing what they are doing…..

Yes but Italy has been a football powerhouse since the 1920s. It is absolutely not the same thing. It's like if the best cricket league was in Kazakhstan all of a sudden or if Algeria took over rugby union.

Exactly it can change, it can be dynamic.

Wasn’t known for golf either a couple of years ago.

What do you think Saudi are doing…..

No use patting them on the head and say mad sheiks and their mad money - they’ve taken over/merged essentially one of the worlds most popular and watched sports this week.

If you think what they are doing now with football isn’t by some design, it’s naïve mate.

We’re on for a power play, opinion are fine but not really relvent - fact is they've already dropped their shape with golf in terms of power broking and are going to pick a fight now with football.

I just think you're discounting the difference in scale here way too much

Maybe, but it will play out, we’re seeing the opening gambit. Politically I think football is in a vulnerable place. I see design. I mean what do people think they are at.

End game, I don’t think they are trying to turn their league particularly elite, same way Liv wasn’t about proving golfin Saudi,, I think they will do enough damage though and scare the bejaysus out of the ruling institutions to get market share and a seat at the power brokering top table.

It’s not going to be pretty but it’s going to be entertaining, like the Ballon Dor winner binning of Real Madrid for them entertaining - 45 million for two years of Will Zaha entertaining. Imagine you are player reading about that deal and wages over your cornflakes in the morning. Better, imagine their agents reading it over theirs
