Summer transfer window 2023

Can we just stay up before we play Utterly Fantasy Football all summer
This summer is going to be very interesting

first you have the unspent gordon money from january 2023 which is 40 mil +

then you have the guaranteed moise kean money from juve which is around 24 mil

the question is whether these funds will be used towards transfers though

the reason I ask this is because why are we being told by the media that we are selling onana to raise money to sign players this summer?

if we get 60 mil for onana then that is 124 mil recouped from onana, gordon and kean

and don't get me wrong I don't want pickford to leave but if spurs or man utd or chelsea come in with a ridiculous bid for Pickford, I can't see us turning it down either

the other issue is that we are still like 200 mil over ffp or something, so does that mean we won't spend much this summer if we stay up?

even if we do recoup 150 mil from transfer fees how much of that will be spent on new players? maybe half if we are lucky

The issue is we need money from transfers to balance out our obscene wage bill and stay within FFP. I would be shocked if more than one of high earning flops still with contracts decides to sign on a permanent with another club.

We may get a couple out on loan, but we will still be left paying the majority of wages for the like of; Delli Ali, Gomes, Gbamin, Holgate, Godfrey etc.

Until we have a sustainable model that mirrors our success (or lack of it) on the pitch, we will always need to be selling our top assets.

How many seasons has it been since we finished in the top half? Was it 5 years ago?

We need to get clever, because we can't afford to slip lower than we are now.

Colwill can and has played LB, LCB, DM. Chalobah the same on the right.

Behind Branthwaite/Tarkowski we have nothing...same with Onana/Garner and Mykolenko/Patterson.

If we could sign or loan one of the two it provides options and quality.

Colwill would be good but you’d imagine he’ll go to Brighton if he leaves Chelsea. We should have got him when we were linked with him before he went to Brighton.

Stay up or go down first piece of business we must do is ship out DCL. If you can’t play more than 10 games you’re taking up squad position and wages.

Its actually more nuanced dynamic in my opinion and i think you are right mate - a decision needs to be made on Dom in the hierarchy.

Its like this for me, strikers are the most sought after, expensive and one of the most limited skill sets in playing pools in the market. To get a good one you have to invest big but you also have to attract them - very few clubs bar the really massive ones can hold two top top strikers - in attracting them - you genreally have to assure them that they are the alpha. A very good striker isnt going to come to a club where there is an existing Alpha - for example Spurs have struggled for years to have a back up at 9 for Kane and have had to rely on wide forwards.

The dilema for us - is we have an Alpha in Dom, but hes not reliable. We need a striker and the one we need will need big investment, big wages and be convinced that they will be the alpha, elsewise you are shopping in the potential market punting or the Maupay market. Thats a big decision for the club in terms investment.

So we are either, dropping Dom down the hierarchy and he becomes the Beta and bringing in a new Alpha or we keep Dom as Alpha and are punting on potential with risk or getting something out of the Kone, Rondon, Maupay market. Alternatively, we buy wide hybrid forwards like Richarlision, but you feel like we need a 9.

Its a big call by the club.

Clubs are only allowed to lose 105 mil over 3 years

Our last 3 accounts show losses of 313 mil

The difference is 208 mil

Those numbers arent FFP numbers.

Also its rolling which means one year drops out and this years is added. Which frees up another £100mil going and a postive year added.

Yeah i said this 18months back...going to be top notch.

Of course, depends on the fee/wages. Not sure if they would pay the wages or stump up the fee...

The other kid Lewis Hall at left back looks ace as well.

Hopefully it’s clear to all concerned that a starting number 9 is required and that’s where the first priority lies in terms of allocating funds.

Pretty clear that Dom isn’t going to be a 90 minutes a week guy and it feels like we’d be better off aiming for 20 minutes a week off the bench than getting 90 minutes 10 times max a season. If his issues clear up and we end up with two PL starter level strikers then that’s a nice problem but we have to assure ourselves of at least one.

Yeh he looks like a really saleable asset.
Thing is though mate, clubs do take a punt. Look at Ings, and Sturridge, poor injury records, but they were always sold on? I dont think we will get loads, but i do think we could get actual cash for him

Ben Davies is apparently available from Spurs. 30 years old, proven Prem player - left back/wing back/Left of a back 3.

Would be a far more sensible signing than Coady.

There’s academy kids all over the country who will be very good players. Just wish we were targeting these players like we did with Stones DCL Branthwaite rather than wasting money on giving donkeys like Doucoure and Keane extensions. We were in for Reece James and Colwill before they became super expensive stars yet didn’t put the money up for either of them. We should be saying to these kids ‘want to play first team football in the prem’ and give them that platform. Instead they’re sitting on the bench at City or Chelsea and we’re wasting millions on absolute rubbish.

If we take these players as being the ones (currently) starting for us in the premier league next season.

PIckford
Patterson
Tarkowski
Branthwaite
Mykolenko
Onana
Garner
McNeil
Doucoure
Iwobi
DCL

In theory:
For depth we need three players at RB, LB MF.

Theres no reason why the left back and midfielder shouldnt be u21 as they wouldnt be starters from day 1. Also if we kept Coleman for a season the RB could also be u18.

Iwobi and Doucoure can both play/rotate in the attacking midfield position for a season and so the focus would be on a right winger and a centre forward.

Again, theres no reason why we shouldnt be going for u21 players as the marquee signings.

At centre forward Hojlund, Wahi or Balogun would be £25-40mil. All of them get a lot of games. Its not huge money at all.

Right wing the likes of Johan Bakayoko or someone like a Xavi Simons, Mo Kudus who could move inside to replace Doucoure after a season.

If we need to lose the loan market on the depth players to focus on 2 quality u21s then thats what we should be doing.

Quality to be developed or quality to start games...not quantity which we seem to do every summer.

You can't honestly tell me you think we have £40m to spend on a striker and £40m to spend on a right-winger.
