I get the age but he was actually pretty good for Villa on both sides in his appearances last season, think he started nearly 20 games in the end.

Rather him than Maitland-Niles anyway if club is shopping for cheap full back who can cover both sides instead of the atrocity of having to shift Holgate or Godfrey there when injuries hit.

Right back is the strongest of the two full back positions too so it makes no sense in that respect either oh well

First half of the season he was playing more for Villa at LB with DIgne getting constant injuries (I live in the Midlands so read the match reports on a Sunday and Monday).

Perhaps Dyche didn't like Myko crying off the last three games injured and wanted him out there. Hopefully Patterson can have a solid pre season and stay fit once the season starts as I agree optics aren't great if Young is starting ahead of him. I assume Coleman is missing pre season so he likely won't be in contention until October/November.

So then maybe they see Ashley Young as primarily a LB since the previous 2-3 seasons he played mostly on the left side. I guess that is them looking at the available LB market, throwing their hands up, and just deciding to sign a stopgap until next season.

Young was excellent for Villa last season, most Villa fans were surprised he didn't get a 1 yr contract extension

Why not? He played there for us already and he's been playing successfully there for England U21s too.

He's an adaptable player. You cant just put him in the CM category. Football isn't as clear cut as that.

So you'd need to take him out of the midfield spots. Wherever he plays he's still only one player.

If the bold part is true, it makes it even more crazy that he was given an extension rather than us bringing in a replacement.

If we end up with, say, 8 signings like we did last summer then Young (presumably on a 1 year contract) being one of them is perfectly fine. There's no way we can stretch the budget to pay fees for the number of players we need while getting the quality we need so deals like this are probably necessary to get the numbers without overly diluting the quality.

But the worry we'll all have, until proven otherwise, is that all the signings will be similar shoestring stopgap types. We'll see.

The thing is you can’t just “release” players, we signed a contract with them, so we have to pay them. Between them they are on £10m a year. So the club will more than likely try and loan them, to make some of that money back
